Choosing The Correct Size Ceymar Spinning Reel For Your Fishing
Choosing The Correct Size Ceymar Spinning Reel For Your Fish
The smallest Ceymar in the family, the C-10 is perfect for 2- to 6-pound test fishing line. A great choice for fishing trout, crappie, bluegill, sunfish and small perch where larger gear can easily over power fish. Pair it with an ultra-light fishing rod for a great combination. The C-10 is also a great choice for small ice fishing outfits.
C-30, C-40: Versatile Freshwater Performers
These intermediate sizes suite the vast majority of anglers that fish for bass, walleye, steelhead, carp, catfish and more. The 30 size is more for finesse applications like drop-shotting bass or jigging walleye with 6- to 8-pound line. The 40 size has larger capacity, for bigger lures and fish like steelhead and catfish with 10- to 12-pound line.
C-55: Great For Inshore Saltwater Fishing
The 55-size spinning reel offers a lot of versatility in inshore saltwater environments. Striped bass, snook, redfish, shallow water bottom fish are all in the wheelhouse of this highly capable reel. It will hold roughly 240-yards of 15-pound monofilament line. Many will fish this reel with 20- to 30-pound braided lines.
C-65: Pier, Jetty & Big Water Fishing
At the 65-size, Ceymar reels come equipped with oversized Ergo Grip for exceptional cranking power. It's the reel of choice for bigger water applications where a lot of line capacity is necessary. In saltwater, the C-65 will be great for fishing over reefs or casting long distances from piers and jetties. In freshwater, this reel will often be fished for catfish in big rivers and lakes.

So I called Okuma Customer Service to see about replacing C-40 that was defective out of the box. Held for 32 minutes at 11am and no one picked up. That's minus two or three stars for total apathy and rudeness toward the customer. I won't buy anything from Okuma ever again.
I teamed it up with a 7ft medium gx2 ugly stik and took it on a trip. It is awesome. Very happy with it. Turns out the small size didn't matter as the set up handled a 30" snook tonight without a problem. It casts a long way too if that matters to anyone.
Will update if anything changes.
Now for the flaws-
The 5.0 to 1 gear ratio is slower than comparable reels of this size- with the Penn Fierce 2 being a 5.6:1 and Kast King Sharky 2 being at 5.2:1 for their 5000 size models. It was definitely noticeable when retrieving 50-75 yards of line as it did become tiring pulling in all those fish when the bite got hot.
If it were just this, I would have given a 5 star review considering the price, however the main thing I didn't like was the reel foot. I noticed considerable flexing when paired to several different rods. It wasn't noticeable when reeling in the smaller fish, but I hooked into a skate and when fighting it the flex was very evident. The drag performed great, and the reel had enough power to muscle the skate in close enough to the pier to cut my line, but all of the flexing was a turnoff. I have hooked into skates many times before with reels of lesser quality and I don't remember the flex being so noticeable.
Overall, I do enjoy using this reel and would give it 5 stars for catching any medium to smaller species of fish. An all aluminum body ( or at least a more solid reel foot) and faster gear ratio would make this an absolute stud that would rival the likes of the Penn Fierce 2 (which IMO, is currently a better purchase for the extra $15- $20). It's probably a tie when compared to the Kast King Sharky 2 as far as smoothness, construction, and price.
Top international reviews
For the price point, i honestly think it's hard to beat. I originally had a Kast King Sharky III and that was a good reel too, but after the bearings went out on it I decided it would be a good time to get a new reel. After browsing around and reading a few reviews, i pulled the trigger on this reel because it fit the price point, looking at the specifications it seemed like it was fairly light, and I loved the design of the reel itself. I was absolutley amazed by the reel, it was incredibly smooth, compared to my Kast King reel in the same size it was as if the Okuma was made out of air considering the weight difference, and I feel like with the Okuma I can feel a lot more strikes.
I love to fish, but dropping $150+ for a higher end reel is not justifiable for me yet. This is an honest review, and I was really blown away by this reel. If youre a budget fisherman I would highly recommend this reel because you truly get more than what you pay for!
Casting is smoother and a bit further, but the retrieval is unbelievable. So smooth and sensitive. Fishing bottom rigs I could feel every pebble and weed. Fishing lures I could feel if a fish farted in the general vicinity of my lure. The only thing that upset me about the reel is that I didn't buy it sooner.
If it holds up, I'll most certainly be buying the next size up for Salmon/Steelhead.
I was not disappointed with the product and it operated extremely smoothly on my medium duty rod. I found the bale came back very easily and is far more sensative than others I've owned which is typical of good quality reels. I would certainly buy Okuma again and am very satisfied with his purchase.
In that context, I found them perfectly solid, lightweight, reliable reels - definitely more of a pleasure to use, and more solidly built than the plasticky modern $25 reel they replaced, and with nicer features and lighter weight than my vintage reels. I brought in my first salmon with the C-30 on 10lb braid main line/10lb fluorocarbon leader and didn't give any thought to the function of the reel as the fish went in several runs - which is the way you want it. I also brought in, and tons of small fish (suckers, baby trout, and sunfish) with the C-10.
I'll probably buy my wife a C-20 for next season.
Definitely falling in love with Okuma products! Ordered an Okuma Celilo rod for this reel too.
I already have the Ceymar C-25 so I knew the C-10 would be a good reel but it pretty much exceeded all my expectations.
I highly recommend this reel for anyone wanting an affordable quality ultralight reel. You can’t go wrong.
