A must read for fans of historical fiction!

John Cribb takes us along a wonderfully descriptive journey of Old Abe's personal and political lives leading up to and through the Civil War. Lincoln's love of country and family and his disdain for war and slavery are beautifully interwoven with events leading him to the White House and through the Civil War. I found renewed respect for Lincoln as through his eyes I read of his many complex political and personal struggles and eventual victories. I did not want this book to end, but Cribb brings us to the end of Lincoln's life in a beautifully written panorama of images that I am sure Lincoln himself would approve. This book will remain on my shelf for many years and be read many times.

Only on chapter six but this is a nice book that somehow makes you fell like you are right there playing with his children, discussing the day to day family issues with Mary and thinking with him about the upcoming presidency. Definitely a great purchase.

This "novel" as the author describes his book, gives us a new appreciation of Lincoln, both for his lighter side and for his endurance of the grim sorrows that war brings. It is uplifting because of this style. It has been accurately researched for biographical material, but it is also a warm retelling of Lincoln's presidency that doesn't grow tedious. It will appeal to many ages 15 years and much, much older. The narrative is relaxed yet educational and follows only the last five years of Lincoln's life. It's quite readable as a novel. Yet such things as the conversations in this book between Lincoln and Black Abolitionist Frederick Douglass can be found in numerous sources online. Cribb draws dry accurate accounts from the past and turns them into lively exchanges of ideas.

I am very well read on Lincoln so there was very little here that was new to me. There were two things that I particularly liked. One was that the timeline, while focusing on 1860 to 1865, there were many flashbacks tying the present to the past. The other thing was it got you into his head, suggesting what he was actually thinking. For instance, when Elmer Ellsworth was killed, he thought about how he would break the news to William and Tad who admired the guy.
