Tsuchiya and Minegishi's epic whydunit (whodunit has been shown since volume 1 and known by his victim since volume 2) comes to a crunch when, although Goto's adversary, the who in question, wins the loser-dies game he proposed in volume 4, and the victory doesn't deliver the ecstasy he had hoped for. So a new round opens. Goto still has to recall what he did that led his enemy to have him secretly imprisoned for 10 years. But the stakes are different: if Goto fails again, someone he loves will die before he does. The visual continuum is as noirish as ever. Olson, Ray

Don't get me wrong; the artwork was great and all, and I love this series, but this is a rather weak volume. That being said, if you've made it to Volume 5, you're probably going to read the last three volumes in the series and enjoy them as much as I have. This volume was perhaps the best drawn so far, but it was also a little anti-climactic. In movies like Payback and Pulp Fiction, the protagonists are particularly clever in what they do. Goto really isn't, but that's part of the charm of this series. He's going up against a smarter man with more resources, and he's still trying to win. ****
