You know the plot by now: young boy takes in a five year old street cat and then a six week old kitten. Then he and his mother have to move, but they cant take the cats with them. (It's never really explained why.) He finds a home for the kitten but (SPOILER ALERT) he has to have the older cat euthanized.
So the lesson here seems to be that anything we cant handle is best solved by killing it. We take in a life and find ourselves responsible for that life... but when it becomes problematic, then we just kill the animal and everyone lives happily ever after.
I'm not sure why anyone would consider this book's final chapter "delightful". It may be a harsh reality — and a pointless one — but still.....
