There are no frolicking animals on today's farms, where mass-production techniques and modern business-efficiency programs turn out high volumes of standardized product at minimal cost per unit. But the product is living creatures, raised in an unnatural environment under appalling conditions. Coats, an animal-rights activist and vegetarian, catalogues a chamber of horrors, animal by animal. Here are pigs in crates, two-by-six feet, often chained to the floor; dairy cows that normally live for 20 years are ready for hamburger by the age of seven, having produced four to five calves and 25-30 tons of milk. It used to take three years for beef calves to reach salable weight; now they go from birth to slaughter in 11 months. Coats has equally gruesome stories about veal production (calves crated, kept in the dark, anemic) and chicken factories. He discusses genetic engineering, environmental effects, transportation of live animals and the ethics of factory farming. While his book makes a strong case for vegetarianism, Coats also advises consumers how to look for humanely raised meat products. This is not for readers with queasy stomachs. Illustrations.

In this plea for compassion, animal rights activist and vegetarian Coats makes grim comparisons between storybook views of farming and the cruel reality of modern meat factories. No calves frolic on the green at today's high-tech farms. Instead, veal calves, beef cattle, dairy cows, pigs, and poultry are closely confined and live from birth to slaughter in needless suffering. Similar judgments have been expressed by proponents of animal rights in such books as In Defense of Animals , edited by Peter Singer ( LJ 8/85). With the growing concern over animal abuse, Coats's book merits consideration. Lists of animal welfare organizations and an extensive bibliography are included.

Don't participate in the pain/suffering of animals

Too bad this book isn't priced a bit lower or updated; got to get this information out there. I have read many books involving the plight of animals: it is tragic and certainly should make anyone (with any compassion for these creatures) to think twice about supporting this hellish business.

In Defense of Animals: the Second Wave by Peter Singers is another important book. I have a small collection which has been purchased through Amazon. Anyone who profits from the suffering of animal should be avoided, if possible, and that includes selling Foie Gras.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED?

Even if you can't go total Vegan, you can reduce the mindless consumption of animals or as this author, C. David Coats suggest, seek humanely raised animals. It's not only heartbreaking to learn of the suffering but it's truly destroying our planet.

This book changed my life!

I know! It sounds like a cliche but it's true. This book did change my life.

I read it in the early 90's, and I stopped eating beef, chicken and pork immediately. Literally. Soon after, I became vegan. This book changed my world view, and I am truly thankful.

I had never heard of factory farming until I read this book. It opened my eyes to a horror that remains largely hidden in our society.

The information is compelling- and horrifying.

Nearly 20 years later, I am a happy, healthy vegan- and I credit this book with starting me on that journey.

a good start to a new lifestyle, must read

i read this book after i became vegan, and although i knew much of this information already, some was still new to me. i reccomend this book for all people interested in becoming involved with animals rights and/or vegetarianism. while this book was written in the late 80's, and statistical facts may be a little off, much of the inhumane treatment of these animals has yet to change at all. it is hard to see how any person with a conscience could turn their back on the issues posed in this book. please read it for the sake of yourself, the environment, and your fellow earthlings, the animals.
