Until I read this book, I knew very little about one of the very best officers I worked for during my 21 years in the Navy. But throughout the book I learned his management and leadership skills, how he thought and why, and at the same time I was able to visualize the same things he saw and feel the same things he felt all because of his excellent story-telling and his wife, Mary Clarity's superb writing.
Great book about a great naval career of a truly great Navy officer!
Where the book shines, in my opinion, is its fascinating coverage of what it takes to become a member of the highly select and determined fraternity of people dedicating their lives to protecting the USA during the most critical years of the Cold War. A period of time also requiring that somebody, the USA, was needed to keep the oceans secure for rapidly expanding international commerce.
Clearly, a national Navy is a costly and demanding necessity and one would expect the subject to be treated quite seriously. And it is, but telling the story through the eyes of a young seaman, growing up in a very tough and demanding environment but who never loses his common sense nor his sense of humor we are treated to a fascinating adventure story. Showing how professionalism, personal responsibility, dedication to the cause of national security and fearless performance are what made the Navy great makes for a fascinating read. I highly recommend this book to your readers.
