I often wished I was one of those readers I'd heard about who gets so involved in the story he's reading that he "becomes" the protagonist and goes through the adventures without the squiggles and clumps of words on the page interfering with his new internal reality. It's alchemical, magical ....
Now, after having finished Pete Grimm's "Old Scores", I'm not so sure it's not better, for me at least, to allow a safe distance from the antics and heroics of the protagonist, Jake Driver. He's so intense. His lifestyle tends toward the treacherous. And, when he's not fearlessly facing off with the bad guys, he's entangling himself with or disentangling himself from a seeming legion of gorgeous women who want him--some who love him--I think my nervous system demands a bit more of that safe distance.
Or, put another way, instead of being one of those people who says of a book he finished that "I just couldn't put it down!"--I find myself being one who had to put "Old Scores" down after every particularly intense scene (and there were many). At the same time I was eager, each and every time, to pick it up again and ready myself for the next emotion-jarring scene.
This is one helluva good novel!

"Old Scores" is a fantastic book that grabs you quickly and doesn't let go. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised and quickly found myself hooked. The protagonist is part James Bond and part Bruce Lee. If you like Jack Reacher (Lee Childs) or Sean Drummond (Brian Haig), you'll love Pete Grimm's new hero Jake Driver.
The plot moves quickly, the characters are interesting and the author's writing style keeps the story flowing smoothly. It's so well done I had to check twice to make sure this was his first novel. In addition to the action and excitement, the author skillfully weaves in a love interest, with some scenes steamy enough to make James Bond blush. As an Army veteran, I appreciated all the little details the author gets right. This is a great read, and I highly recommend it. Now I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Reading an unknown author's first book, is not my idea of fun, however a friend said: "Read Old Scores:"
I wasn't enthusiastic, downloaded it to have a brief peek, became immediately engrossed and put it down only to eat and sleep until I was finished: Impressive!
"Old Scores" is a fast paced romance thriller much in the genre of John D. McDonald's "Travis McGee" series of the fifties. Grimm's protagonist, Jake Driver, is a flawed but charming man who can't get it emotionally right with the girls. He loves them but has difficulty with long term commitment. In this gripping novel Jake wrestles, I think somewhat successfully, with that personal devil while fighting real devils. The novel is set in the beautiful Low Country of coastal South Carolina and Grimm combines a sensitive portrayal of a complex man involved in both romance and a deadly game amidst the Carolina live oaks, dolphins, and marshes. I enjoyed it immensely and look forward to many exciting sequels if for nothing else to see how Jake deals with his own flawed character.
At the huge introductory price of $2.99 what can you lose?

This book was a very enjoyable read. Fast-paced action and interesting characters. A great story for a rainy weekend or vacation reading at the beach.
The story's got a lot to like......strong "good guys", evil "bad guys", beautiful women, government agents, drug lords, etc. Most of the action takes place in coastal South Carolina, and it's clear the author has spent a great deal of time there himself.
A great, fun first novel which introduces Jake Driver. I'm already looking forward to Jake's next adventure!

Who wouldn't enjoy a well written novel involving romantic mystery and martial arts? Really vicious bad guys deal drugs, tote military grade weapons, and murder innocents. Throw in the semi-recluse, semi-retired, sailor and agent, Jake Driver, and the pot and plot boil over. A great first novel. Good job.

I liked the cover. But the hero never wore sunglasses and a tie.
I liked the blurb. But he never got to the Caribbean.
I liked the themes: aviation, drug gangs, weapons, federal agents, even the romance.
The storyline was very appealing to me and I had no problem finishing the book, although at times it felt like a train wreck that you couldn't take your eyes off.
The male characters were anything but strong: oh, they killed the bad guys, but in between they spent every waking moment discussing or thinking about their feelings. One guy actually wept in the middle of a gun-fight! (Never been in one, so I don't know if that is realistic, but it didn't help the story).
And who talks to the local Sheriff to let them know that "if you need the law breaking, just let me know" (para-phrase)? The prose in general was just too much. The police decide to look the other way while our heroes save the locality, even winking to subordinates as they do so. Yes, winking.). There is plenty of description about everything, even to the point of small pieces of commentary about the merits of Fox vs MSNBC, and organized religion.
This book is 50/50 Romance/Thriller. Personally I prefer 10/90. Unless I'm buying a romance, which is not what I thought I was getting.
I did finish it, but I would not recommend.
