Top customer reviews
I took the lazy approach and just started painting, no sanding, prepping etc. I had just moved out of state, I had some old items I couldn't sell and surprisingly salvation army won't take Ikea items because they're "particle board" or something. I had an Ikea bookcase and little shoe rack that I decided to experiment on. Meaning if it doesn't turn out well, it will get thrown out. I am not a "handy" person, I wasn't about to sit there for hours prepping, especially after the exhaustion of a multi day out of state relocation. I threw down some plastic and started spraying.
The fumes was the worst part, I had a little mask but it didn't really help. I had the windows open, that didn't help. For the smaller items I did this outside. The heavier ones I did inside. It turned out pretty good. The Ikea bookcase was a semi shiny espresso color I grew tired of, I was going to paint it white, but I decided to try the nice Satin Stone Gray color. I started off with a white paint spray and changed my mind. I think it worked out well because it gave it that "Aged" look I like. So take a look, I intentionally did not want it "perfect". Good nice coat, no dripping like another brand I bought. The fumes though, were a bit much.
It worked great for me. I used it to coat my headlights after sanding them to get the dullness out. If you spray on thick or immediately after shaking maybe sometimes it will at first look dull, but it cures clear/mostly clear and then polishing it with Plastix makes it crystal clear.
Step 1) 400-600 grit
Step 2) 2000 grit (and don't polish yet or the spray wont stick as well). Note: they will still look pretty dull at this point.
Step 3) spray this on and do a few coats. Light coats. You will see the lights become clear as the liquid fills the sanded ridges.
Step 4) Polish the orange peel off of the clearcoat after letting it dry (24 hours probably best). I used the polish and drill attachment included in the 3m headlight kit. Plastix would also probably be good.
After 1 month it still looks good, and I assume it should last a long time, but time will tell.
