Olivia

He tilts my chin up so my eyes meet his, his thumb brushing lightly across my lips. I close my eyes. I know Z is trouble. I know that being with him is going to get me into trouble. I don’t care.

At least at this moment, I don’t care.

Tossed from foster home to foster home, Olivia’s seen a lot in her sixteen years. She’s hardened, sure, though mostly just wants to fly under the radar until graduation. But her natural ability with computers catches the eye of Z, a mysterious guy at her new school. Soon, Z has brought Liv into his team of hacker elite—break into a few bank accounts, and voila, he drives a motorcycle. Follow his lead, and Olivia might even be able to escape from her oppressive foster parents. As Olivia and Z grow closer, though, so does the watchful eye of Bill Sykes, Z’s boss. And he’s got bigger plans for Liv…

Z

I can picture Liv’s face: wide-eyed, trusting. Her smooth lips that taste like strawberry Fanta.

It was just a kiss. That’s all. She’s just like any other girl.

Except that she’s not.

Thanks to Z, Olivia’s about to get twisted.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"One of the most interesting premises of any contemporary YA book this year. Moreover, its parallels to the literary powerhouse Oliver Twist are brilliant. With Barnes' near-flawless writing, excellent character development and a smart storyline that readers will devour, this book deserves its RT Top Pick." -RT Book Reviews Top Pick
"Barnes has taken a story known to the ages and modernized it for the younger generation. It's a glorious retelling of a magnificent story that opens up the world for a whole new group." -The Ledger Independent

I read the entire Olivia Twisted book on a long overseas flight. It had my attention from the beginning and kept me entertained until the end. I enjoyed the modern twists on the classic novel. The heroin is tested when she is faced with fitting in with her new (and only) friends. I like that she had a few hiccups along the way which made it feel more realistic. I'd love to see more novels by Vivi Barnes, this one was great and left me wanting more.

I read this in one day. Well told, with depth to most of the characters in ways you wouldn't expect. It's impossible not to root for Liv to come out on top, and even bad boy Z isn't pie plate shallow. I enjoyed it very much.

Tired of reading unimaginative pap? Take a trip into the exciting and sometimes-chilling world of OLIVIA TWISTED. This is definitely a story with a new twist. You'll be into this novel from word one, and you'll have trouble putting it down until you're savored every last
word. Vivi Barnes gives you the inside track on the shadowy world of computer hackers and what happens when a troubled teen finds herself being twisted into their lair. Join her in this adventure, if you dare!

The rating of 4 /5 was fair in that the story had dark issues of humanity, love, and limited action. The love was replaced with lust and passion and returned to love which in the teenaged boy's world impossible to reconcile... in real life it is lust, passion, more lust and then love. But with the teenage audience it was rather soft on the lust and passion.

The language was at times over the edge with the gratuitous four letter and or eight letter language... but it just isn't my cup of tea but in respect for the author it unrealistic high school language.

After a very long, long, long, looong, book slump, I came across Olivia Twisted and I was intrigued. I liked the premise of a new girl, Olivia, and a group of teen hackers doing illegal computer shenanigans. The mystery of “Z” certainly grabbed my attention. I like when boys have non-descriptive single letters for names. It’s very enigmatic and appealing.

To be honest, I thought there would be more illegal activities in Olivia Twisted considering it’s a book about a group of hackers that steal money, but there wasn’t much actual illegal hacking done. This book is more about Z and Olivia and their relationship. I’m not complaining per say, because it was nice to see their characters and relationship develop. On the other hand, I was a little disappointed there weren’t many covert, fast-paced, and highly suspenseful action scenes. I would say the only action we do see in Olivia Twisted is the climax and that wasn’t what I was really looking for when I say suspenseful hacking.

Regardless, the story was well-paced and the characters kept things interesting. Unfortunately, the (small number of) secondary characters felt a little flat, and certain parts of the story weren’t very realistic, but for a book that I chose in a slump, this wasn’t too bad. I would say Z was my favorite aspect of Olivia Twisted. He kept things going for me.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Olivia Twisted for the summer and it kept me busy for a few hours. It may have it flaws, but the unique story and let’s face it, pretty much Z saved this book for me. I don’t think I will read the sequel, but I did it to my to-reads, so we shall see.

I read a lot of Middle Grades and Young Adult books. This one had me hooked from the beginning. In fact, it kept me up too late...and then got me to reread Oliver Twist - just so I could find the parallels as I reread Oivia Twisted.

This is a great debut from a talented author. I can't wait for more! I will certainly share this book with teenaged readers.

Really liked the pacing, and character development. Z's inner turmoil was very obvious and well done. Wish I could have gotten some of his side of getting out of the life before showing up at the school.
