Expert Review Summary

DPReview Gold Award
November 2016
Olympus wasn't kidding when it said that the E-M1 Mark II was "overdeveloped." In terms of Raw speed the camera is ridiculously fast, whether focus is locked at 60 fps or when tracking a subject at 18 fps. The AF system is one of the best we've seen on a mirrorless camera. DCI 4K video quality is superb - and rock-steady thanks to 5-axis in-body stabilization. As with its predecessor, build quality is impeccable.

The E-M1 sets a new bar for mirrorless autofocus. Initial acquisition and recognition of your desired subject ? which you can just tap to specify ? is nearly instantaneous, and the camera will track that subject around the frame with uncanny accuracy, often with only minor hiccups at 18 fps. The capable AF extends to video as well, which also benefits from the rock-steady image stabilization for steadicam-esque footage.
Carey Rose Carey Rose Camera Expert
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 II is, overall, the best Micro Four Thirds camera we've used. It offers incredible 18 fps bursts with continuous autofocus and 60 fps bursts with autofocus locked, and yet battery life has increased thanks to a beefier battery. With a large selection of native lenses, the E-M1 II makes for a highly capable all-around package.

Reasons to buy

  • Advanced autofocus system: The E-M1 Mark II combines on-sensor phase detection with traditional contrast detection, providing a total of 121 all-cross-type points. Subject acquisition speeds are excellent, and the Mark II has excellent continuous autofocus, even at 18 fps, though tracking can occasionally stumble.
  • 5-axis image stabilization: The E-M1 II shifts its image sensor to correct for shake in five axes. This makes for steadicam-like video footage at wider focal lengths, but it's longer focal lengths where the IS system really struts its stuff, reducing shake by over six stops.
  • Ultra-fast burst shooting and Pro Capture: With focus and exposure locked on the first shot, the E-M1 Mark II can capture images at an incredible 60 fps. The camera can adjust focus and exposure on every shot at 18 fps. A Pro Capture mode saves the 14 images taken before the shutter is pressed, which may catch a shot you would've missed otherwise.
  • 4K video capture: The E-M1 II is a capable video shooter, supporting both DCI and UHD 4K capture at bit rates of up to 237Mbps. DCI 4K quality is excellent, UHD less so, and 1080p footage is disappointing. The 5-axis IS system does an excellent job at reducing shake and the camera offers a flat color profile and 4:2:2 output over HDMI.

Things to consider

  • Pricey for a smaller-sensor camera: With a list price of just under $2000 at launch, the E-M1 II may be hard on your wallet.
  • Subject tracking can stumble: While impressive for a mirrorless camera, the Mark II's autofocus system can struggle when trying to follow a subject during bursts and video, sometimes focusing on the background.
  • Soft 1080p video: While the E-M1 Mark II is capable of capturing amazing 4K footage, Full HD video is relatively soft.
  • Takes time to learn: The interface on the E-M1 Mark II can be overwhelming to new users and it can take a while before one becomes adept at using it.
  • LCD blocked when cables are attached: When the camera has a cable plugged in (such as HDMI, microphone or headphones), the LCD cannot be rotated.
