Pros:
- Great image quality, 100% crops are very sharp at low ISOs. None of the softness some reviews talk about
- AF is super fast, even in darker rooms
- FOV on m4/3s is perfect for small indoor rooms or larger group shots outside
- Small and light. I can fit this lens + OMD-EM5 into my jacket pocket
- Manual focus mode. Makes dark shots possible without the AF hunting forever
Cons:
- Doesn't have a very helpful distance scale on MF mode
Very pleased with this lens and generally take it out over the Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 because of it's size. The depth of field is also acceptably shallow to let your subjects pop. I worried at 17mm there wouldn't be enough background blur. There isn't as much as the 25 1.4 but that turns out to be an asset in a dark room with people at different depths.
The “clutch” ( pulling the ring back) automatically puts the camera into manual focus ( Olympus).. and give me incredible composition flexibility. Btw once you use it... you’ll be wondering what isn’t like this on all lenses.
The hood doesn’t come with it, and I should have added it. Another discovery, it’s how small it is on the Olympus OMD 1mkii body.. which IIS a good thing but, coming from the canon slr world, I’m use to having a B.A.L. ( big @xx lens)..I’ll get used to it😜.
It’s not weather sealed and because it so fast F1.8 ( for m4/3). I recommend an polorizer and or a ND filter. For this s hi noon conditions. Other than that , don’t hesitate and get this Lens. I have the silver version.

1. Build
This lens is made of some quality stuff. The weight feels great in hand but it does not add anything to the camera itself. The only area where there may be some concern is the focus ring. When switching from manual to auto, there is some definite wobble. I personally have not had trouble with it but it is there.
2. Glass
The pictures are tack sharp. I cannot state that enough. The center as well as the corners of the pictures are sharp and distortion is kept at a minimal. Chromatic aberration is little to none.
3. Speed
This lens is fast. Auto focus is near instantaneous and has really helped to get those shots.
So in conclusion, I am obviously in favor of this lens. I checked the other options available in this class and I am sure they are all great options as well but I am glad I went with this one.
After about 4 weeks of daily use, it has performed exceptionally well. It remains on the OM-D camera body most of the time. The wide angle and fast, 1.8 maximum aperture, provides optimum photo versatility.
Tom Ellis
Now for the cons and the -1 star rating.
Color is not quite as vivid and deep as some of the other lenses I have such as the Pana-Leica 25mm f1.4 and the O45mm f1.8. This is not and shouldn't be a deal breaker for anyone as its easily fixed in post processing but something to be aware of.
Second, the Manual Focus choke, though loved very much by me, does not engage the MF settings on the E-M1. If you don't own a E-M1 (or M5) the manual focus has 2 settings that can be chosen to help you focus your shot. One is called Peaking and the other Zoom. The Peaking setting shows bright white lines around the edges of subjects in focus. Something new to me and took some getting used to but I now enjoy it a lot. Zoom setting is just that, the camera will ultra-zoom 100% in to a designated area to assist you in seeing what is truly in focus. A little harder to use in my opinion as the image tends to jump around if your not steady. Worse in longer focal ranges. That being said, both these settings can be automatically applied when you choose the MF setting, however when you use the 'clutch' on this lens it does not engage that setting. I am in the process of figuring this out so if something changes I will report back.
All in all, this is a must have lens in my opinion. Its 34mm equivalent focal length (2x crop) is one I personally love. Very versatile for street shooters and when your not afraid to get close and personal with your subjects. Annie Leibovitz made most of her Rolling Stone Magazine photos with a 35mm lens. It adds a very real life feel to your captures and has the quality we crave.
