It has good, basic functionality and ability to transfer files to a PC. The features are not overly busy, with stuff never to be used. I can get down thoughts on the fly, I can capture things I have to do while I'm driving, I can voice journal, I can voice summarize jobs. Later I use Dragon voice dictation software to transfer and transcribe whatever voice files I want into a document on the PC.
The more current versions of this model lack a clip on the case. This should be brought back *at least as an option.* The case could easily be designed with a way to add an optional clip, if desired.
( Lectures,Church Services, Funerals, Dictation, etc) It is not a music recorder or player, and is not advertised to be such a device.
The speaker is not very loud, but if you transfer the file to your PC, you can playback the files through your PC Speakers. It records in the .wav format, and files transfers are not speedy, but they work. The voice files can be large because they are wav, but you can convert them to MP3's using Musicmatch or Winamp.
The device is small enough that you can keep it in your glove box or car console, or ladies purse. I use mine frequently and I might add, it has a scheduled recording function, so you can program it to record future events unattended. I loaned mine to a friend that needed to do some secret spy type stuff at work(so he said). He hid the recorder and set the timer to record every day at a certain time for about an hour. That was more than I needed to know, but it did work. It also has a VOX feature, but results vary a lot depending on the sound source.
Battery life is just ok, but I use rechargeable batteries so it does not matter. They last long enough to do the job.
I own several devices that say they have built in Voice Recorders, ( Cell Phones, MP3 Players, Palm Devices) but this is the only one I would take with me if I were betting my life on getting a recording.
Would you really want to trust your Son or Daughters Graduation Speech to your Cell Phone Voice Recorder...... ?
It is hard to go wrong with this unit or the VN-480PC. They are almost identical, except for the length of recording time. Olympus has some newer devices that may be better, but this one is very reliable.
Pro's: Lite weight and small enough to carry, Buttons are all simple to use and the instructions were really easy to read and use the device in a matter of minutes! Comes with a sweet feature, a VCVA (Variable Control Voice Actuator) Meaning it'll record and pause itself in low audio surroundings and restart again to record when audio is present again, flawless recording.
Con's: I purchased this device for aid with video to sync up vid and audio like when doing reports in a convention to capture the audio better, it works like a charm but I'm so into high quality I thought the audio would come in at 44.1kHz CD quality rather the HQ is 22kHz but that's really it for cons, and the 22 doesn't even really bother me at all.
If you use a headset to hear playback it will come in as mono but when transfered into the computer it's Stereo so that's a plus ;)
I use Audacity to help clean up the audio for any hissing that the recorder gives. It's good for what you'll need it for, if you're into playing music and using this for your recorder you have to be Nuckin FUTS! Get a stereo cassette recorder instead ya goofballs :) then transfer it into the computer. AH-Doi!!!
This recorder allows me to record a wave file with time and date stamp, so i always know which lecture this was that I recorded. I simply upload, and i can convert to mp3 for my podcast. this little recorder is the bomb. it is smaller than the battery pack on my boss's wireless mic.
I havent used any of the timed recording or playing features. I bet i could scare the heck out of my wife or coworkers. or find out what they say about me at the water cooler ;)
Just dont forget to load the software on every machine that you plan on uusing.
