I bought this small recorder for a class I was taking over a two day period and it out performed what I thought it would do. The recording was crystal clear and picked up the lecturer perfectly. I would break and then start again anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours later. I put each recording in a distinct section so that when I down loaded it a few days later onto my computer I knew exactly where in the lecture I needed to go to review anything that I was unclear about. I positioned myself in the front of the classroom but it would have been just as good from the middle of the room and ( maybe from the back, I didnt test it ), it was a large room. For the money I would recomend this little recorder.

I bought this recorder to use as a audio journal and to jot down ideas for future writing projects. The folder function makes it easy to divide up these ideas and retrieve them.

I am pleased with the sound quality as I don't expect it to be recording studio quality. It does the job for me.

I do agree with others about the issues with noise from handling, the small switches (I often have to put my glasses on to see the switches!), and the sudden battery popping out bit.

But all in all, I like the light weight, the features, and the amount of recording time.

Much cheaper to buy this here than at Best Buy.

The Olympus WS-200S is a cool item-great size, great technology. BUT! The instructions do not give enough info--especially when the system is full. Can't get through to Olympus for help. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use it to the end of it's memory. If you do, it is all over. The software freezes and the unit is inoperable. After using this unit only twice, I now have a $100 piece of junk!

the recorder record and play ok but two things I am disappointed:

1. the battery is not included even thought the package claims it does.

2. the battery indidcator does not work well. It would show full charge and then unexpectedly, recoding was interrupted with low charge displayed. However, after one powers cycly the unit, the battery shows full charge again.

This recorder does a good job of picking up local voices. Don't put it in your pants pocket and walk around because about all you'll hear are swishing sounds. It seems to work well in transferring the files to a computer as it plugs into a USB port and looks like another portable drive.

My biggest problem has been the device turns off unexpectedly. After doing this about a dozen times, it finally got to where it wouldn't turn on at all so I ended up sending it back to the manufacturer for warrant repair. Fortunately, they were able to repair or replace it and it's currently working.

I bought this recorder because I needed something that would produce near-broadcast quality for my CDs and podcasts. This one was relatively cheap (around $100), with amazing battery life (read on), could record up to 5 hours (more or less) continuously, and plugs directly into the USB port for uploading (works on a Mac, too, but you need a WMA converter). And it records in SsTtEeRrEeOo. After much hemming and hawing, I finally accepted that I was going to need to make one more purchase before I was satisfied. Turns out that the onboard microphone, though wonderfully sensitive, is too sensitive to the case it's in - producing an unacceptable, tinny noise. So I bought a microphone, for more than half-again the price - a tiny ME-50s, also from Olympus. And my dreams have all been realized - small, powerful, clear sounds, more than ample for a podcast or voice CD, not quite as high-fidelity for music, but for my purposes, well nigh unto perfect. O, the battery life seems a little shorter with the microphone. It draws its power from the single AAA battery that powers the whole unit, so a sllightly earlier battery demise is not worth mourning over.

Others reviewers said that it records well, but if you so much as look at it cross eyed, you get terrible audio 'static' for lack of a better word.

And you know what? They were exactly right. For my purposes I can let my recorder lie still while it records about 98% of the time, but the other 2% of the time, I know I'll have to lower the volume on my computer big time when I play it back b/c the noise will horrendously loud, and I'll be lucky to hear what I was trying to record in the first place.

So, it's a great recorder for the money IF you can let it lie still while it records. If you can't, do NOT, I repeat, do NOT buy this recorder.

I use this recorder for class lectures. Sound quality is very clear without background noise. Using the supplied headphones I can clearly hear even questions from the back of the class which I could not hear during the lecture. There is no need for an external mic, the internal mic is more than sufficient. The ease of uploading files to my computer is simple and quick. The instructions do not seem to include sufficient operational info, but the device is fairly intuitive to operate. This recorder does everything I've seen in others, but better and in a smaller light weight package. The only caveat would be there is little warning of a low battery. It is simple to replace the AAA battery. I simply always carry and extra in the bag I carry to class. This recorder exceeded my expectations.
