Review

A lot has changed in short seven years since San Francisco's Om Records first started dropping wax into the world. Back in 1995, while most of America's underground scenes were raving and rolling to the hard, electronic sounds of techno, breaks and hardcore, these organic groove merchants were moving to the sound of a different drum machine. Sides of cool jazz vibes, deep, aquatic house, trippy hip-hop and futuristic soul found Om proudly representing a genuine San Francisco sound. It felt more sophisticated than most American independents, freely roaming between these disparate but complementary styles with, well, style.

Today, the landscape is littered with indie labels able to similarly cross such sonic boundaries. As such, Om has had to diversify their interests even further, resulting in this eclectic two-disc celebration that's also Om's 100th release. While there are plenty of classic downtempo moments like King Kooba's "Salvation," there's also Detroit techno from Juan Atkins, banging house from Johnny Fiasco and Fred Everything and backpack hip-hop from People Under the Stairs. Granted, the dramatically eclectic nature might feel schizophrenic to the more puritanical head, but open-minded music fiends will find plenty to love in the happily chaotic world of Om.

The OM home team climbs aboard the Noah's Arc of street lounge for this 100-publication celebration. Chill-house, break-hop, whatever, the manifest reads heavy-hitter. Try Mark Farina, Soulstice, Marques Wyatt, Andy Caldwell, Afro Msytik, King Kooba, Rithma, Ming & FS, on and on. Collectively, this is their statement of how far they have come, more important, it's indicative where we will be going. The styles on this disc are as individual and idiosyncratic as the artist. They do share a common bond - the ties that bind. In their vision of future music, they have declared a nation of like hearted, of similar spirit and soul, thriving in a sonic, soundscape with no borders. All are welcome. Make joyful noise indeed. Om has done their homework. No repeats, all new or unreleased material. The master thesis has arrived. This double disc reads comp-of-the-year; thankfully no DJ mix lurking in the background. Yeah baby. Bring it on.

Fantastic set on these discs. I like the sound of this. In fact there's a radio station out in Seatlle, KBCS 91.3FM that streams similar tunes. It's driven my music purchases for a few years too.

In fact listing to Everyday right now.

OM records compiled this treasure trove of Electronica/Lounge groove tracks to celebrate their 100th release and they scored a hit. The two stand out Gems on here are Natural and I Can't Wait (Perpetual Bliss Mix). Essential for any electronica collection this is also a good buy if you are new to the genres of House/Electronica/Lounge music

There are a couple of highlights in this set, but the 2nd disc is a virtual write-off. As a "celebration", I expected more from a label that has much to celebrate. These discs should have been mixed. Idle tracks don't allow the listener to get into the flow of the tracks, and many were not created to stand alone.
Highlights: Rithma's "Just Before Dawn"... BIG SMILE, and Ryan Raddon's "Get Busy" would make Prince smile, even if it is a little fouffy around the edges.

I was somewhat new to music considered "techno" when I first purchased this CD. What a treasure! This is the rare two CD compilation with no filler and loaded with music in many different styles. However, there are common threads running throughout: they are quality, elegant production, and deeply soulful music. The label and the artists herein deserve much credit. Buy this CD if you want to find where great music resides in the post 2K world.
