About Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids, are essential to many of the body's functions, but cannot be synthesized by the body. Instead, to get the required amounts, they must be taken in from food or supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as pollock, salmon, cod, tuna, and halibut; other seafood, including algae and krill; and some plant and nut oils. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in supporting cardiovascular and joint health, are important for brain function, and are crucial for normal growth and development.

Good product... This bottle was bad! See review.
This product is good. But this order from seller Swanson was not. Capsules had seeped out into bottle. Fish oil all over my hands. And stinks to high heaven. Returning!

First, I don't typically right reviews (I don't really have the time). So, when I write one, it's either because a product is REALLY good, or REALLY bad. I'm happy to say this falls into the category of "really good". First, considering the price, the quality/quantity/potency of what you're getting is actually rather impressive. It's important to note that the oil in these pills--like many lower-end fish oil pills, is in the form of EC's (Ethyl Esters). Without going into a bunch of chemistry gobble-di-gook, the basic thing to note is that you should take these supplements with a small amount of healthy fat--I like to take it during dinner when I do a broccoli stir fry with olive oil (for example). The other type of fish oil is called "triglyceride". This fat structure is the same as the one used endogenously (aka "inside of your body"). In theory, it is a bit easier to absorb triglyceride omega 3 than ethyl ester. Ethyl ester based products tend to keep better than triglyceride, and it is cheaper as certain bonds must be broken during the processing phase of fish oil production that result in an ethyl ester anyway (I.e. work must be done to transform the product BACK into triglyceride form).

Okay neat. Why do you care? Well, your body cannot easily process ethyl esters. It basically has to break down that molecule, combine it with some other molecules, and re-create a triglyceride. Your body will do this easier if it already has some of those "other" molecules. E.g. fat. NOTE: This is NOT carte blanche to eat a bunch of fat. And if you've eaten in the past three hours this is probably un-necessary. I only bring this up because it's important to note the differences in this type of fish oil from triglyceride, and partly explain how they can make it as cheap as they do. Studies have not shown this form to be less effective. Yes I am a scientist.

Neat! So, ok the product itself: it helps me, personally. I'm NOT overweight, I don't have high blood pressure. In fact, I'm in pretty good shape. I run (etc). But nevertheless, I always feel much better when I'm taking this then when I'm not. Fish oil is an anti-inflammatory, just like an NSAID, but without all of the fun side effects. I often have sore joints from working out. Fish oil helps with that. I'm a college student with a heavy workload under a lot of stress. Fish oil also helps with that (see google scholar). To cut it short, this product helps me in a lot of ways, and for the price, I really do think it's worth it. Not just for certain people either.

So, why am I writing this review?

I get a lot of stuff on amazon, and I don't review most products. I am writing this review because of Nurtigold's AMAZING customer service. One of my bottles of fish oil went rancid before it was supposed to. Note: to check rancidity--test the firmness of your pill. Is is squishy? That's bad. It should be firm. If you cut one open, how does it smell? Fishy? Or "trashy"? You want the first. It's important to store your fish oil in a COOL environment. If you don't, it WILL go rancid early.

Nevertheless, I did all of the above and still, the fish oil went rancid early. I wrote to Nurtigold, they responded in 12 hours and stood completely behind their product, sent me a free replacement bottle AND two new products to try (which arrived in 2 days), and all around were very amicable. I feel that the difference between a "good" company, and a "great" company, is determined not by how good the product is, but what the response is when something goes wrong. A good company makes a good product. A great company makes a good product, and when something happens, rectify it immediately.

Nutrigold is a great company. And they will have my business for years to come.

I have been taking fish oil on and off for the last five years. I recently had serious stomach issues mostly related to a problematic gall bladder, and I really am cautious what I put in my body. I really see the supplement industry for the most part as a big money pit, but all in all I try to eat a well balanced diet, mostly organic. Going back to stomach issues it seemed any fish oil or vitamin I would take would really bother me even if it was a whole food easily digestible product on a full stomach. So I took a break for a year or so, and because I do not eat fish I really feel it is important for me to take a quality fish oil. For the last year I was taking New Chapter Wholemega which I really liked, it did not bother me and had good reviews including a good rating on Labdoor. Over time I began reading reviews about how the Omega 3 content for the price was pretty low compared to other options out there. I then saw this product as the #1 Fish Oil for quality and value at that current time (a few months ago). I have been taking this fish oil for 1 month now, and I have no stomach issues, no fishy burps ever. I am not going to sit here and say it makes me feel better, I have more energy etc, because I really couldn't prove that. I will be able to justify the use of this better if my cholesterol is effected in a positive way, or any other health benefit that I am unaware of. I would recommend this product mainly because of the companies stand on supplying healthy, safe and effective products.

I've tried 4 different brands of Omega-3 pills. I'm taking 3 grams/day (3,000 mg), so I've standardized on that quantity regardless of pill size or purity. Thus, I have a pretty good comparison of things like fishy-after-taste, digestibility, and price. I refrigerate my pills after opening and with the quantity I'm taking, the bottles don't last very long (2 months max). Thus, all are as fresh as they can be for the life of the bottle.
These are the 2nd least fishy of the pills I've taken, but only marginally behind the best. The best were coated so they didn't digest until they were through your stomach (I bought them at Whole Foods, but forgot their name. They were not IFOS approved, and they were lower purity than any others I tried, according to their label). The NutriGold pills were less fishy than the 'premium' Nordic Naturals. In all, the fishy taste was not very noticeable and did not cause me any difficulties, and this was true for all the pills I tried.
These are the 2nd most pure of the pills I tried. Since all the pills I tried are IFOS 5-star rated, they have minimal impurities and toxins (heavy metals, PCBs, ...). According to the IFOS tests, these are 83.3% pure DHA and EPA. The most pure were 84.5%. Most are in the 60-70% range.
However, these are BY FAR the most cost-effective way to get Omaega-3 DHA and EPA of any of the pills I tried. They are 1/3 the price of Nordic Naturals per mg of Omega-3. The next most cost-effective, Omapure, are 50% more expensive.
Since, at the end of the day, I'm very price sensitive between similar items, I will go with these again. In fact, that's why I came to Amazon today, to buy more.
