Editorial Reviews

The Omega Experiment is the quirky, epic, gritty and uplifting prog creation from Muskegon (Michigan, US) duo Dan Wieten and Ryan Aldridge. The
"The Omega Experiment" is a concise yet detailed introduction to their sound; heavy guitars, euphoric synths and rich layered vocals come together to create
a wall of progressive rock lushness.

Like their fellow modern prog artists, The Omega Experiment create a massive sound with home equipment and have no fear of experimentation and
rule breaking.

The guitars are big and technical and layered with keyboard sounds reminiscent of Dream Theater and Queensryche. The vocals range from powerful lead lines, big harmonies and demonic screams in the vein of Devin Townsend and Mike Patton.

The band's inspiration comes from Guitarist and Vocalist Dan addressing the last 10 years of his life, focusing on his excess and drug abuse which took him to a dark place and his determination to move onto a brighter future.

The Omega Experiment has been lucky enough to receive public praise from Devin Townsend on multiple occasions, most notably on his Twitter account the night they unleashed their "Karma EP" to the masses for free on Bandcamp, saying, "Actually listening now...great great work man! Seriously great stuff Dan, I fully back it and appreciate the effort you've invested I wish all luck!" The EP later went on to receive over 2000 downloads.

The Omega Experiment released their self-titled debut album digitally via bandcamp, itunes as well as physically in 2012, to much critical acclaim.

The band is currently at work writing their next album and look forward to getting back out and touring, with a strong hope to be able to reach their fans in other countries.

***EDIT*** See below for a more in depth review.

I heard of this artist via Devin Townsend (of Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Project fame). I downloaded the EP for free, legally, and didn't listen to it much. But, when I saw this was out, I decided to give a new artist a shot.

I am glad I did.

If you like Devin Townsend, you must buy this album now. Stop thinking about it and buy it. He wears this influence openly and proudly.

If you like progressive metal then you will definitely like this album. The songs are, by turns, heavy, complex, beautiful, melodic, and layered. Fans of Dream Theater, Kings X, and Porcupine Tree will certainly be happy. I have only listened to the album about six or seven times but I am enjoying it more and more. I think you will as well. After a few more listens, I will probably swing by with an update.

****UPDATE****

I very much enjoy this album. I've listened to its few times, now. Here's a few thoughts on the songs...

The Gift opens the album and very much reminds me of Devin Townsend. The beginning feels like "Truth" from InfinityInfinity It's an upbeat, catchy song. Some nice guitar work and the drum programming is complex and driving. This song has some great vocals as well. I keep looking for some lyrics online to no avail. I wouldn't mind being able to sing along. This song is one of the strongest on the album and sets the bar high. Stimulus starts of and makes me think of Spock's Beard with some cool vocals and then I am reminded of Steve Vai's Sex and Religion album.

I run Prog Rock & Metal (PRM) internet radio (7+ years now) and I have to tell you, The Omega Experiment was a total shock and awe for me. A friend recommended me to them and requested I add them to the station. I only listened to a couple songs before I knew this was an instant purchase. TOE is in very high rotation on the station. I will be getting a podcast from Mark Ashby, Progtopia, and will be adding it to the station for airing (usually on the weekends). Back to this release -- it's one of those releases that the melodies remain in your head, and, you may even wake up in the AM with a few chorus lines echoing inside. The vocals are awesome. The musicianship is top notch (especially the drums!!! -- I'm a drummer of course). This is a must buy if you like good progressive metal music --- MADE IN THE USA! Will Mangold, [....] !
