Received book quickly. It wasn't what I was expecting. I would prefer to read more stories of people having experiences. Most of the book was about the process of interviewing people for the book.

Dr Ring is an excellent writer ... interesting project and valuable info enjoyed the book very much....

As a national lab trained hard sciences researcher, one who has, for personal reasons, researched these topics for the majority of my life, all I can say is that Kenneth Ring ties together some pivotal loose ends (for modern humans at least) that it is little wonder he seems under appreciated thus far: he is in a league of his own, & well ahead of his time. Delving deep into what is so hard for logic-based minds to fathom... I am practically stunned he was able to return with such coherent considerations & superb illumination of our relationship with such otherwise obscured, yet fundamentally crucial aspects of existence... As an educator now, I find ways to gently incorporate small morsels of his towering achievements, and I imagine that one day (perhaps when he himself has enjoyed a more complete death experience) his contributions will be better esteemed, as they truly are some of the wisest and most profound that I have encountered, after many years of careful examinations. I also have a high opinion of the author he draws on (Whitley Streiber) after many years of following his writings/speculations. Simply put: with nothing to gain I have no hesitation publically expressing here my heartiest gratitude for their efforts. It will likely sing in my being well beyond my own dying day. Have I made myself clear?

Kenneth Ring (born 1936) is Professor Emeritus of psychology at the University of Connecticut, and has written other books such as
Life at Death
,
Heading Toward Omega
, etc. He states in the Preface to this 1994 book that his editor sent him a copy of Whitley Streiber's
Communion: A True Story
, and "Reflecting on all this, after finishing Streiber's book, helped to germinate the basic query that led to the research reported in this book. In its simplest terms, it is this: Are NDEs and UFO encounters... in effect ALTERNATE PATHWAYS to the same type of psychospiritual transformation...?" (Pg. 11)
He states, "the more I delved into the varieties of UFO encounters... the more convinced I became that... There were hitherto unnoticed links between NDEs and UFO encounters, as well as among the people who were having these experiences." (Pg. 38) He also suggests, "there may be SOME KIND of connection between the structure of dreams and fairy tales on the one hand, and UFO narratives on the other---even if we cannot say exactly what it is." (Pg. 63)
He observes, "It has long been known that approximately only one of three persons who survives a near-death incident will later describe having had an NDE experience of some kind. But why only one in three? Why should some individuals experience an ineffable light and a feeling of divine love when they nearly die, whereas others... remember nothing? This question has stumped researchers from the beginning... when I first met Raymond Moody [author of Life After Life ] in 1977, I made a point of asking him about this. His reply was as candid as it was pithy: 'Ken... I haven't got a clue.' ... thus conundrum has continued to elude NDE investigators to the present day." (Pg. 113)
He argues, "one significant predisposing factor in the developmental history of our extraordinary experiencers may well be the presence of relatively high ... levels of childhood abuse and trauma and possibly other forms of stress." (Pg. 139) He adds, "Overall, individuals who report UFO encounters and NDErs appear to have a greater likelihood of showing dissociative tendencies in their psychological functioning." (Pg. 143) He also notes, "following extraordinary encounters, respondents, on the average, don't become more religious, they become more spiritual." (Pg. 183)
Ring's book will be of lesser appeal to those focused on NDEs, but will perhaps greatly appeal to those interested in a wider range of paranormal phenomena.

I find myself reading books that I don't expect to complete agree with. It also helps if the book covers and idea that I don't know much about. The Omega project covers both nicely.
Although I have never had an NDE or any substantial UFO experience I have read and know people in the former. This book provides a psychological look at people who have had UFO experiences and those who have had NDE experiences. Kenneth Ring makes a compelling argument that the two are related based on shared characteristics between the two groups verse control groups, in this case those people like I who have an interest in the experience. It is a nice scientific approach to help better understand the people and the experiences and I found it interesting.
Dr. Ring goes on to explain what might be happening. Basically, that these experiences are moving the human race to another level. The 1992 book is rather dated in its view of the environmental crisis, but I would not say off the mark entirely. His theories on the subject lead to an earth consciousness that is working to save itself and mankind from destruction. To this end, man is either becoming more "imaginal" in nature or we are beginning as a species to better recognize our true nature. He is solidly in the camp of man evolving to become a more "imaginal" or spiritual being if you will.
I am more in the camp that there is a creative consciousness and that we are becoming more aware of our true spiritual nature or soul that exists for the current time incarnately, but can also exist disincarnately.
It is an interesting perspective, one that I don't completely agree with, but one that give me some information on a subject I didn't know that I didn't know much about. Perhaps, even with the age of the book you might find the book challenging your beliefs or expanding your mind.
Happy reading either way.

Interesting book

Starts well, but then for his theory to take effect he has to reduce UFOs to imaginary things, and not real, and for that you have to throw half of the evidence away because it doesn't go you way.
Funny how the author's cousin, Dr. Leir presented evidence that there were some metalic objects in association with abductees, the so called IMPLANTS... .

Basically a load of woffle and unsubstantiated twaddle. But what else would I expect from a Whitley Strieber acolyte. Ring is adept at making something out of nothing and trying to equate near death experiences with UFO abductions. John Mack made a much better job of analysing UFO encounters and the whole abduction thing. How folks like Ring manage to cling on to their jobs baffles me. Disappointed!

Very interesting book on NDE's well worth a read and combine it with Heading Toward Omega by the same Author and you will have a good basic view of near death experiences and the possible reason they happen to so many people.
