I have been reading sci-fi type books for well over 50 years. I cut my teeth, so to speak, on Asimov, Heinlein and Sturgeon to name a few. over the years I have read literally hundreds (if not thousands) of books in this genre so I have seen almost any type of plot or story line that has come down the line. I can say that Joshua Dalzelle is a very competent writer. I have already read his two trilogys about Jackson Wolfe and crew and thoroughly enjoyed both. And tho he did say at the end of the last book that there would be another trilogy coming it hasn't appeared yet and I await the release of those books and hope they appear soon. I gave all of the books in those series a rating of a strong four. I very rarely give a rating of 5 as the book has to really be at the top of the heap. There are not many authors who have gotten a five from me over the years.
Now, with that said, I just got done reading Omega Rising and it is one of those rare books that I just could not put down and I read the darn thing in basically one reading. I greatly enjoyed this book, I really like the characters that are being formed and look forward to reading more about them as Joshua has them evolve. I gave this book a rating of 5 as I really do think this book deserves it. I highly recommend this book for an afternoon of very enjoyable reading, whether sitting by the fire in the winter or just sitting on the beach soaking in the summer sun. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Thank you sir for the enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the rest of the adventures you have in store for this crew.

Omega Rising chronicles the adventures of Jason Burke, a veteran Air Force Pararescue Operator who has isolated himself in a cabin in the woods because of a troubled past. Jason, still being in his early twenties, is predictably bored with his minimalistic existence, that is until what he believes to be an aircraft crashes a few miles from his cabin. Being a curious (and paranoid) young man, Jason grabs his trusty AR-15 and heads out to check out and possibly render aid to the crash. What he finds is an alien gunship eerily similar to a US bomber and when he boards the ship, he is accidentally knocked out by the fumes from burning fuselage in the gunship. After coming to, Jason makes his way to the bridge where he makes the acquaintance of Deetz, a synthetic life-form who is in control of the ship. After a few misunderstandings (and some gunfire) Deetz offers to take Jason on the adventure of a lifetime (or a job to be more precise, albeit one on a different planet), of the good ol' "Travel to exotic locales, meet interesting people, and kill them" kind, and Jason being the bored young man that he is, accepts the offer.
The writing of Omega Rising is surprisingly clear of Grammatical errors (I noticed only two instances in the entire novel, and they were both minor at worst), while at the same time being rich and interesting. The main characters are fully fleshed out, some of the ones we meet later in the novel seem a bit one-dimensional, however that is mostly because they are introduced late in the novel and are not given enough time to grow and evolve. As to the plot, it is definitely the strongest point of this novel, being full of action, intrigue and of course as Joss Whendon once so aptly put,"sudden but inevitable betrayal". Deetz's sarcastic humor and Jason's snarky replies serve to keep the novel light and humorous while still maintaining a serious plot. Overall Omega Rising is a surprisingly cohesive and well written novel, it is unfortunately, and lamentably, short at only about 200 pages.(Although to be honest, I consider books with fewer than 700 pages to be short)
Omega Rising takes you on an adventure much like Firefly, a trip thought the wild frontier of galactic civilization where you stay alive only by relying on your wits and carrying a big gun.
I enjoyed Omega Rising Immensely and will definitely buy the following novels in the series.

The Omega Force series is one of my favorite series ever written. I got hooked on it first time I read it in a 10 author/book volume. The series reads fast and is action packed. Character development is in my favorite style - learn by watching, (not reading endless descriptions of what the characters are feeling, details on what they look like, etc.)
I just finished Omega Rising for maybe the 4th or 5th time. Every time is just as enjoyable as the first. More or less, the plot is about a human, Jason Burke, who goes on an adventure across the galaxy, gathering up a team of aliens, on a spaceship he stowed aboard by accident. The book captures the morals and failures of the human race thru Jason's character. I like him because he isn't perfect, and doesn't always make the right decisions or handle things the right way, but his intent is always good within his perspective of life. I did not serve in the military, but I get a sense of what people who served in war zones might be going thru, and how they are trained to lead, despite their pain.
The other characters are very unique themselves, with their own personalities. it is easy to distinguish one character from another, how they feel, what they might say, what they might do. (Some books I read and i can't tell who said what unless I focus on the "Jason said..." part.)
I think my only criticism of the book, if you can even call it that, is the use of itallics here and there to communicate what Jason is thinking/feeling. sometimes I like it, sometimes I find it annoying. I understand it is to help with the main character's development. In later books the thoughts were better conveyed with Jason actually speaking out loud.
Overall, a very good read and very enjoyable. I'm always waiting for the next book of the series to come out.

Better than what I was expecting…

One Jason Burke, an ex-soldier back from the wars (Afghanistan and Irak, of course!) has taken refuge in his cabin high up in the Rocky Mountains, although the story does not bother to mention exactly what he is fleeing. He ends up unwillingly aboard a space ship and is enlisted to help the other crewmember and from this moment onwards, the adventures start across the galaxy where he is the only human confronted by all sorts of alien species, some of which are suitably evil.
Along the way and during his (obviously successful) adventures, our hero comes across five other sentient beings with which he ends up forming his Omega Force, a band of private contractors (a polite word for mercenaries) who will take on lucrative contracts to help the weak against all sorts of oppression.
The story is not exactly original. There are few surprises, if any, but it is nevertheless quite enjoyable and easy to read. There is also some rather interesting action and features, such as the gigantic cargo belonging to galactic crime lords and buried within an asteroid which they have hidden their treasures. Do not, however, expect everything to be “realistic” or even plausible, because this is likely to spoil your pleasure. Instead, relax and you will spend a few entertaining hours in reading an uncomplicated adventure story – the first of a series - which is better written that what I was expecting…

Okay but needs an editor

I feel the need to add my two thoughts here. I liked this book BUT it really stinks of being vanity published. You will find the book littered with spelling mistakes, rhyming sentences and other mistakes. There are cliches everywhere from the sensitive warrior to the awkward doctor. There are no female characters at all. I read this book and half of the next in the series before I gave up. Its ok but not worth 5 stars. I feel that Joshua would REALLY benefit from a strong editor. I think he has a career as an author ahead of him but I dont think he's quite there yet. Having said that I did enjoy Warship, it seems to be a little more sophisticated(refined story-wise?) than Omega Rising. Other that that its readable and some people will enjoy it.

A space adventure

A kind of light hearted romp through space. The human Jason gets caught up in galactic affairs, mostly by accident and builds a crew of lost aliens in an escape from a nefarious gang Lord. And so Omega force is born, to help right the wrongs and save the down trodden with their newly found freedom.

I totally love this series having read all of the series currently published. Its not full of science that I don't understand, the aliens are friendly (mostly), its well written and the story skims along with a speed that keeps you absorbed and almost afraid to stop reading in case you miss something. Roll on OF Book 8 - ever noticed how your fave authors seem to be so slow in writing sequels?

Great Read

A thoroughly good read. I've previously been reading Vaugh Heppner and BV Larson and had been very impressed with the space sagas they wrote. This is equally as good and has more than enough action in it and interesting twists etc. If you have enjoyed space corps books by Vaugh Heppner and BV Larson, you will enjoy this series as well. Already half way through the 2nd book which I think is even actually better.
