Some Omnigrid rulers have a 1/8" gridded section which is a perfect template for miniatures and color wash quilts. The 1/8" grid markings can also be used for drafting and cutting.
Why Omnigrid rulers are the best!
It’s a big statement, but it’s backed up with solid facts. Omnigrid rulers boast a range of features that are standard on each and every ruler. Most importantly, they’re laser cut, which means they’re super consistent. This is an attribute that quilters really appreciate – accuracy is identical on every ruler, providing consistent precision when interchanging ruler sizes.
- Edge markings for accurate measuring
- Laser cut edges for smooth cutting
- Patented double sight-lines show on light and dark fabrics (US Pat. 6,839,971)
- Multiple degree angle lines for easy pivot of 30°, 45° and 60° cuts
- Left- and right-hand numbering and angle system

The thing I like most about it is that it does not have the extra 1/2" seam allowance. Adding that extra half inch was a bad idea, and now most of the rulers add it. The manufacturers think quilters need help adding half an inch to a measurement. We don't.
The rulers with the "built-in" seam allowances do not make cutting easier, they do not reduce mistakes. They make cutting more difficult and increase the probability of mistakes. You have to constantly check to make sure you haven't rotated your ruler. Turn it around and around. all that spinning is tedious and annoying.
This 15 inch ruler is one of the few rulers on the market that does not try to help me do math by making my ruler more difficult to use. I love it!
If you are wondering whether or not you would use a big ruler like this one, the answer is yes, if you are a quilter you will probably use it a lot. I use it to square things up, and I use it in conjunction with my 8x24 inch ruler to cut and crosscut my strips. Yes, some of my rulers do not get used much, but I use this 15x15 square all the time.
A word about shipping-- I was worried that this big ruler would get chipped in shipping. BUT Hancock taped these great cardboard supports on both sides of the ruler. Obviously someone put some thought into how to ship this successfully and the plan worked perfectly! So, a big shout out to the shipping people, WELL DONE!
I was hesitant to spend the money on this because it's just a ruler, but I'm not disappointed. Using the fabric cutter with it I only had to apply minimal pressure to keep a straight line.
Definitely a nice investment if you're gonna be working with fabric.
