Senator Whitehouse has been an eyewitness to history from his earliest days as the son of a diplomat. These experiences, his obvious love of learning and deep respect for history and what its players can teach us today are inspirational and thought provoking. It is also an effort that transparently reveals what has informed the Senator's world view and at the same time what guides him as he serves the people of Rhode Island in the United States' Senate. This little book contains some profound social and political gems of wisdom along with some little known insider tidbits. A very easy read, I recommend it to all Rhode Island citizens.

Many books of inspirational quotations and aphorisms cover the same material, but 'On Virtues' is filled with fresh gems, many of them virtually unknown. Some make me laugh; there are a few I can't read without choking up; and there many I want to put in front of friends. Part of the pleasure of perusing this book comes from the suspicion that this is truly Whitehouse's very personal collection, selected and cherished throughout his life, not just pulled together to make a book. His comments supplementing many of the entries give us an intimate view of a humane and thoughtful public figure.

This book should be required reading in senior highschool classes and freshman college levels as well. The categories of the quotes and statements are divided by defining major life experiences we all live through.
Heart-swelling; mind dwelling;fantasy making....

Lovely compilation, thoughtful, not trite and it is comforting to see that there are people who do want to serve, who love service and that is why they do what they do.

The author is not only an outstanding Senator, he is also profoundly intellectual. His wide-ranging selections guide the reader to understanding wisdom and honor. Would that others in Congress would read this book.

This is one of the best compilations I have found! Since I was very young I have loved finding
books like this! It is sectioned into different subjects so you can find just the right quote you
are looking for, and Senator Whitehouse has added notes that give insight into him and when and
where he came into contact with most of the quotations. (an extra bonus)

Since Sheldon Whitehouse is our Senator, I was interested in seeing what he came up with for this book. It is remarkable. I especially enjoyed reading the bio section and learned a little more about the Senator.

The quotations are very well selected and I like that Sen. Whitehouse wrote a little note with each explaining why he selected it. I was pleased to see that some of the quotes were already favorites of mine.

It's a great little book to keep around and pick up and reread. It's definitely not a "one and done" book -- it's a "keeper."
