My previous model OnGuard broke after almost 4 years of heavy usage.
(May be earlier, since the internal parts fell apart after the yellow cap fell off)

Pros: just the right size (see the bottom of this comment)

Improvements: yellow caps are more solid, made of hard plastic

Changes: got heavier (but not much and acceptable assuming the hardened security)

Cons: yes, you have to precisely put the parts together in order to turn the key and lock it.

Here are three tricks:
1) always make sure that the key is turned completely to the "Open" position (it's a bit hard when you have it on the same chain with other keys)
2) connect the parts with the same motion and effort as some use for assembling the weapon after cleaning and lubricating (Click)
3) if the key is not turning, follow 1), pull the parts 1-2mm apart, tilt a little and press them together firmly (Clack).

google for "Sheldon Brown locking your bike" to check the best use of this lock.

I bought the lock because it had mostly positive reviews, and I liked the fact that it came with 5 keys. I opened and closed the lock a few times when it arrived, just to try it out, and then I didn't use it for a week or so. The first time I actually locked my bike with it, I could not get the key back in the lock when it came time to open it again. I would up leaving my bike locked where it was and walked home. I came back later with the other 4 keys and a can of silicone spray. I tried every key, none would enter the lock. I sprayed the lock to no avail. Finally, I got one to enter the lock and was able to open it. When I got home, I retried the lock, and the same thing happened again, I couldn't get the key in the hole. I am returning the lock for a refund. This is certainly not a product I would recommend. Forewarned is forearmed...

The lock appears well-made and locks on both ends. I'd give it 5 stars. The Protection Plan, however, I'm not as pleased with. It is touted as paying you up to $1501 if your bike is stolen while locked up. But it does not cover the cable; only the UBolt. And it does not cover if "torches, battery operated tools, or any power tools, including hydraulic tools, were used to open or cut the lock". Plus to register for the plan, you have to fill out a form and mail it with a check - the coverage isn't free - $1/1 year, $10/2 years, $15/3 years. And they may require a copy of the receipt for your bike (that part of their webpage isn't very clear).

So - buy it for the protection, not for the protection plan.

Used this to secure road bike in the bike room of apartment complex. I know that this is difficult to pry open because we had forgotten about the key that we had to call a handyman and he had to use an electric saw to free the bike.

Not my favorite lock, but it does its job well enough. I like the "foot" that Kryptonite uses on their design better. This just doesn't feel like it meets the same quality standards. Feels lighter and leads me to believe it would be easier to break into. I use it as a backup lock and it's fine, but I wouldn't trust it overnight.

A guy I know accused me of “drinking the Kryptonite Kool-Aid,” and since I wanted a smaller lock than the the New York I've been lugging around for eight years, I decided to try an OnGuard. I'm glad I did, but there are drawbacks.

Most (all?) OnGuards have the double shackle design, meaning a thief would have to cut through both sides to remove the lock (or at least one before he commenced prying). The smaller and cheaper Kryptonite designs only have the shackle on one side. Since I wanted a small lock, Kryptonite had nothing to sell me in that regard. The key and the locking mechanism are solid, and for some reason they give you five keys - pass them out to your friends and family, I guess.

Where OnGuard lacks is in the finishing touches and mounting. What's with the yellow bumpers covering the little rubber plugs covering the white plastic plugs, OnGuard? Drop the plastic parts, cover the ends with a little more steel, and be done with it. These parts will fall off or break off eventually anyway, so I just ditched them immediately. The mounting system suuuuuucks compared to the Kryptonite - all plastic clamps. I'm actually going to see if I can use the modern Kryptonite mounting parts (they fine tuned their system somewhere along the way) so I can have the best of both worlds.

It's also kinda rattly, but so was my New York.

Replaced an older lock that still worked, but "donated" to a friend who needed a lock. I like the short-length locks. This one works nicely for me. The frame mount is one of the better ones I've seen, but it still rattles like crazy, so I removed it and carry the lock in my ever-present pannier. The cable is short, but functional.

I should start by saying this is the first bike lock I bought... ever. I don't have the fanciest bike, but regardless, I wouldn't want it to get stolen. It's a good bike lock, love that it comes with the loop cable also for extra protection! I know there are other bike locks out there such as the Kriptonite brand that are known to be 'better', but those also cost a lot more. I only use my bike on the weekends and keep it locked indoors when I'm home, so this works for me and it's a great price!
