This Autumn, the leaves will finally weaken, lose their grasp and fall. The cycle of man is much the same. We are born, live and die within our given 'time.'
Ann Tatlock takes you to a place where time has stood still (or has it?) The story is centered around a Pastor that has succumbed to the desire of the flesh. He takes his damaged family to a place of escape. A small mountain town will give them a new start, or so he thinks. He now is a car salesman at a dead end job. His wife hates him and his children pretty much ignore him. The old house they occupy is not empty however. Soon after moving in, each member is 'visited' by former and future inhabitants of the house. They are, of course not real; or are they?
What message are these 'beings' trying to convey, why are they there and just how are they connected? This story takes you to a place that time is so relevant you will be anxiously awaiting each new character and their message.
How did the past, even before their existence, the present and the future mold their lives? Can they heal? Can they survive the present pain plus future pain? The most important question would be, "Is God in control of ALL time? Did He place this family, or us for that matter in a specific time for a specific purpose? Can sin change God's time frame?
I never imagined science fiction and faith could be brought together in such a manner as this story. Don't miss it. Oh, by the way, 'Don't forget about the star. You'll know what I mean later.
Who says sci fi and inspirational can't mix? Ann Tatlock has done an incredible job of addressing the issue of time as seen from man's eyes and from God's point of view. I don't usually care for books written in the first person or in present tense but her writing is so good, I was swept into the story without even thinking of those two personal preferences. Considering the theme of the book, present tense was the only choice - it just shows the further artistry of this wonderful book.
Finally, I enjoyed a story where the romance happens between an already married couple trying to hold together and strengthen their marriage in spite of what life throws at it. We often think of romance stories as guy gets girl, girl finds Mr. Right. This book is as much about relationships as it is romance--it was the perfect blend.
I read a review before I read this book that said "Once Beyond A Time" was the best book she had read in a long time. I've been reading a lot of good books lately, but I think I would have to agree --this one is awesome!
Once Beyond A Time was "beyond!" Ann Tatlock tackles a difficult subject: where is God? Is He in the here and now? Was He in the past? Is He in the future? She shows God as He claimed to be: eternal, without beginning, without ending. He is everywhere His children are, no matter the time, no matter the place. She always accomplishes bringing God to light with such subtlety the reader never feels as if she/he has been "preached to" the way some Christian authors seem to do. I always come away knowing a little bit more about God than when I began one of her novels.
Her following each character's thoughts, actions and weaving them seamlessly together was a delight. I wanted to flip forward to find out what happened with each person before I read the next chapter. (No, I didn't.) What a way to build suspense: tease the reader at the end of each character with the beginning of a different character. As one of the other Commenters stated, Ms. Tatlock throws in enough twists and turns to keep you surprised and entertained.
If you have never read one of Ann Tatlock's novels this is the perfect one to begin a rich and rewarding relationship with a master storyteller. If you've read Ms. Tatlock's novels before this is another award-winning story. Do not miss Once Beyond A Time!
