About the Author

Peter Neill is Founder and Director of the World Ocean Observatory, a web-based place of exchange about the ocean and its relation to climate, fresh water, food, energy, health, security, economic development, policy, governance, and cultural traditions. He is the past Director of the Connecticut Marine Science Consortium, the Maritime Preservation Program at the US National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the South Street Seaport Museum (New York). He is the author of three novels, numerous books on maritime art, history, and literature, and the ongoing audio feature, World Ocean Radio, available as a blog, podcast, and in distribution in the US and around the world in six languages.

PETER NEILL is founder and director of the World Ocean Observatory, a web-based place of exchange for information and educational services about the health of the ocean. Peter is a frequent speaker at conferences around the world related to fresh water, ocean issues, fisheries, maritime history, sustainability, policy, and education. Throughout his career, Mr. Neill has dedicated his expertise to organizations devoted to marine affairs, education, and culture. He was President of the South Street Seaport Museum from 1985-2004; is a past President of the Council of American Maritime Museums and the International Congress of Maritime Museums; and is a co-founder of The Sound School, New Haven, Connecticut and The Harbor School, in New York City, two innovative public high schools that use the marine environment as a context for teaching and learning. His publications include novels (3, 2013; A Time Piece, 1970; Mock Turtle Soup, 1972; Acoma, 1978); non-fiction (Maritime America, 1988; Great Maritime Museums of the World, 1991; On a Painted Ocean, 1998); The Once and Future Ocean: Notes Toward a New Hydraulic Society (Leete’s Island Books, 2016); Aqua / Terra: Reflections on the World Ocean (Leete’s Island Books, 2021), as well as numerous anthologies and articles on maritime history and art. I guess i call myself an ‘environmentalist’ having done a masters in environmental studies and now working in marine conservation for the past 15 years. I was very curious when Peter’s book was proposed to me and i did not really know what to expect. I wondered how it would be written ...as a class textbook? As a scientific volume? The end surprised me, the book was written in short chapters that kept me interested and asking myself various questions at the end of each chapter and looking forward to the next. I see it as kind of a Silent Springs for our Oceans and fresh water resources, a wake-up call to the planet’s users that it is time for a radical shift and that we need to start now. The author’s holistic approach to the current state of environmental affairs leaves no stones un-turned, he explains how the social, economic, cultural and environmental issues facing populations today are so closely knitted together and are all linked to the precious resource of water. A resource that none can live without, that is finite and yet that we use and abuse everyday like it is inexhaustible. The examples of global failure in relation to our natural world are explained eloquently in the book: Acidification of our Oceans, Eutrophication, severe droughts and storms linked to climate change, endangered species due to failed management practices, the list goes on and on. We need to change drastically how we measure success and wealth, and rather than focus on GDP we should focus on ecosystem services of fresh water, food, energy, health, and security as basic human rights. The discussion on how to move forward as a society is very exciting. The author goes through how changes to our financial, social and political order are required to refocus on a new hydraulic society and the consequences if we fail to act in time. I recommended this book to all my friends and co-workers, no matter what their background; the book speaks to everyone and provides guidance on how we can take steps at home, in our workplace to start initiating this change. The book had a deep impact on me personally; I have started to do more to play my part and including my son on our journey towards contributing to a new hydraulic society.
