Okay, I'll admit to buying this CD only to hear track 10, "Pictures Remembered / Aranjuez" -- Jeff's tribute to the Muchachos Drum and Bugle Corps, with whom he marched in the 1970s. This track begins with a classical guitar intro, then segues into a trumpet solo that's very reminiscent of the one he played in the opener of the Muchachos' show in 1974, when they took 4th place at DCI Finals (see the video uploaded on YouTube from the Ithaca, N.Y. show earlier that summer).

Getting back to track 10: After Jeff's solo, a large brass ensemble powerfully closes-out the piece with several themes from Concerto de Aranjuez. The arrangement bears more than a passing resemblance to what we heard from the Muchachos over thirty years ago: up-tempo, dramatic, beautifully emotional ... but the track concludes all too soon at 2:15. For this piece alone, I'd give the CD 4 stars. I'd have given 5 stars if Jeff had stretched-out a bit and explored more of the "Aranjuez" themes the Muchachos included in their show.

The other tracks don't venture far from the "light jazz / easy listening" of the period (1999). They're okay for background music, but didn't connect with me emotionally.

The recording is generally good, but sometimes lacks dynamic range. The supporting instrumentation on some of the tracks is recorded at too high a level, forcing Jeff's trumpet to be attenuated in the mix (i.e., far different from what you'd hear in concert). All the more reason to go hear him live, if you get the chance.

This album moved me in a number of ways. First of all, it SOUNDS GREAT! The production is simply top-notch. As for the music, Jeff shows his tremendous range: passionate, the coolest of the cool jazz, funk, and blow-your-hair-back drum corps soloist. I've heard him live and was knocked out! Buy this record...you'll thank me later!

Inspired lead trumpet with phenominal effortless range. Spanish themes transport listener to exotic locales. Can almost picture Kievit playing this center stage in front of a full stadium of fans while balancing on one foot.

finally I've gotten my copy of "For Once" Here is a man that shows true range and depth in his musical ability, a true talent who should be heard, I'm talking to you CD 101.9 , the smooth jazz station in NY. You play chris Botti, Miles Davis, winton Marsalis, where is Jeff kievet? The tribute to the Muchachos, brought tingles through my body (track 10) The music is wondeful and if you knew the man's history, you would appreciate the album all the more. It was dedicated to those who don't and still remain from a very big family known as the Hawthorne Muchacho's. it took a 1/4 of a century since our families worst day, but somethings are too painful to forget. Thank you Jeff for a great album and for your dedication to us. I can only hope to hear more from you soon. I also liked the little touch of the "Carnivale" solo in there. Thanks for being you and the memories. A must buy for any horn enthusiast.
