An adventure of mind, body and spirit. A dream they dared to hope for. Magi's writing takes you from the space of disbelief to one of action. The immediacy of the family to be as involved in the community as possible is made known by sports and activities for the boys in the community along with varied hikes in the area. You are immersed in vegetation, facts on bird and animal life and the entire experience. The photos included are the icing on the cake. New Zealand is a wonderful place to be and Magi's writing re-aquainted me with places I only visited in the span of a quick 2 week bus tour. Her writing leaves nothing unrturned and you experience the people, the life and the nature of this beautiful country.
She also describes the amazing experience her whole family had during their stay in New Zealand from the many joys to some of the challenges of adjusting to this country and its culture so far away from their family home in Nova Scotia. I am looking forward to reading book II in the trilogy Cry of the Kiwi- This Dark Sheltering Forest.
But it's not a dry scientific treatise either. Written as a diary, the book engages the reader in the Nams family dynamic as Magi, her husband and two young sons settle down to life, work and school in a land far from their home in Nova Scotia, Canada. Well-written, well-researched and well-documented, it's well worth the read. I'm looking forward to reading her next two books in this trilogy.
