Review

"[S]cores big with a delicate love story and red-hot passion. Fans of smalltown contemporaries will savor this delicious and heartwarming story, a refreshingly realistic romance between two great characters."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Top pick! 4 1/2 Stars! Shalvis never disappoints with her witty, comical and überromantic reads. The ninth installment of the Lucky Harbor series should be on every reader's TBR list. Fans of contemporary romance will fall in love with Aubrey and Ben and find their sexual tension electrifying. Our leading lady has a lot to prove in this book, and women will likely see a little bit of themselves inside this character. Sweet and spicy - what more could you ask for?"―RT Book Reviews

Well, Jill Shalvis gives us another taste of what romance is like in Lucky Harbor and every trip we take is better than the last!
I love the way this author writes, her characters are fun and believable, tender one minute and funny the next. The men are hot, the women are sassy and the Lucky Harbor grapevine is alive and well.

Ben McDaniel is back after 5 years away from Lucky Harbor spent trying to get over the death of his wife Hannah. He's a favorite son of the town and is welcomed back with open arms and warnings to stay away from a certain wild girl, Aubrey Wellington whom he has known since he was a kid. But when Aubrey throws a drink in his face (she was aiming for someone else) it's kind of hard to ignore her, especially since she's one beautiful woman, trouble or not.

Aubrey is tired of her life and her reputation as a trouble maker (well earned she's the first to admit) so she sets out to change her ways and her life by making amends to the people in her life she has wronged... not an easy task for anyone, let alone a woman with a past as colorful as Aubrey's. When Ben shows up to help her rehab the bookstore Aubrey has opened, the attraction between the two is strong and immediate, but what starts as a "no strings attached" fling quickly turns into something more. To complicate matters further, Ben starts to question whether he is willing to risk his heart again and Aubrey has a secret that she knows could change everything between them, and keeping quiet about it is killing her!

Once in A Lifetime is a fun, fast paced romance and you can't help but admire Aubrey as she goes through the difficult task of seeking out people from her past to say she's sorry.

My Thoughts:

I was lucky to be given the opportunity to read, Always on My Mind (Lucky Harbor #8), recently, by Jill Shalvis. This had been my first foray into Ms. Shalvis' writing, and I could instantly see why this author was such a popular, and stunning success! The great news about the Lucky Harbor Series is that even though it has several installments, these books can be read as stand alones, or in any order, because they are companion novels. In Always on My Mind, I got to know the main characters, Jack and Leah, and was introduced to certain secondary characters that really stuck out to me. I met Luke and Ally, whose story was before the one I read, and Ben and Aubrey. When I got offered to read Ben and Aubrey's story, I was thrilled! Ben came off as a very mysterious, quiet, and loyal man, and I instantly wanted to know more about him. Aubrey came off as a snotty, piece of work, and I didn't like her character. It was obvious that these two were attracted to one another, but I never would have guessed how passionate their love affair would become.

In Once in a Lifetime, we finally get Ben and Aubrey's story, and what an amazing story it was! Ben lost his high school sweetheart, Hannah, five years ago, and never got over her accidental death. For the five years after her death, he traveled to third world countries, ravaged by poverty and war, to put in water systems, and help the people make a living. He ends up coming home, because he cheated death and it opened his eyes to the fact that he wanted to live and didn't want to put himself in danger anymore. Lucky Harbor has always been his home. His Aunt Dee, cousin Jack, and their best friend Luke, are his family and he has missed them dearly. Little by little, I fell in love with Ben.

This is another great book from my favourite author Jill Shalvis, even better than the previous ones, if that's possible. It was different from the others because it was about a mean girl, who wanted to make amends to her wrongs, and a nice guy, Lucky Harbor's favourite, who wants to settle down.I enjoyed very much the dialogues among all the characteres of the book especially between Aubrey and Ben because they were full of wit and funny. Although at the beginning of the book I was a liittle hesitant whether I would like or not Aubrey, her efforts to change people's opinion about her and her not giving up, made me like her very much. Thanks very much to the Publisher and Jill Shalvis for giving me the opportunity to read it in advance.

Though I generally liked the story of Ben and Aubrey, it did not end up my favourites list. It's a nice small-town romance, written in the engaging style of Ms Shalvis, but there were too many small things that bothered me and prevented me from rating it higher than 3 stars.

I will start with the good things I liked in this story. I loved the heroine, Aubrey. She was a strong and kind and determined character. I usually fall for the hero in the romances I read and did like Ben but not as much I as hoped.

Aubrey was a troubled teen, she has a bad reputation but she actually is a good person and tries hard to make amends for her mistakes. She has grown up and sees thing in perspective. I admired her determination to change, to be a better person. What I found particularly remarkable was that she wanted to change for her own sake, she didn't need a guy to help her or show her path to being a better, kinder, happier person. She had figured her mistakes on her own and was working on fixing them just for the her own sake of being and not to impress anyone.

Then, Ben came along. He was on her list of people she had wronged but he was also her high-school crush. Ben was a complex character. I liked a lot of things about him - his concern and care of the 5-year old twin sisters from the foster home, his loyalty to hi friends, Jack and Luke, his affection for his aunt Dee. My problem was his attitude towards Aubrey. He grew to care about her, saw her for who she trully was, yet he kept running away from her and from his feelings for her. He was alpha man in bed but when it came to facing her feelings for him, he acted like a coward. He couldn't forgive her mistake towards him and used this to break things between them.
