Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republicborn Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. BRILLIANT ARTISTRY!! The Original Soundtrack vs. Broadway Version

I absolutely fell in love with the movie for many reasons, but the movie is a true musical in every sense. And the music is INCREDIBLE! I immediately made a purchase! I've found myself listening over and over and over to these songs, getting lost in their swoon and sweep, which are not only inspiring, but so deeply moving, and so very satisfying musically and emotionally.

Glen Hansard is a brilliant song writer. The songs are poetic, lilting, and drifting at times, and at other times I find them to be very strong and grounded; they are bold and yet very tender. Then there are tunes that whisk you into an escape of lovely whimsical joy. There is definitely Irish humor. I've cried and laughed. The guitar mixed with the piano and violins are perfect harmonious companions.

As for Glen and Marketa, their voices are hugely complimentary in so many ways. The male/female duo is PERFECT. Glen's voice has a broad range and it's very strong. Marketa's voice is sweet and soft; very feminine, and she knows how to harmonize beautifully. She compliments him very well, and I agree that she tames him in some ways from being too overwhelming; perhaps too loud to be audibly palatable for enjoyable listening. They are lovely together.

The songs are absolutely delightful. I own both CD's (original soundtrack and Broadway musical)-- the original movie soundtrack as seen here in this review, is a more raw acoustic style and is a true following of all the music found in the movie by Glen HYansard and Marketa Iglovia. The Broadway version is also excellent. It's richer and fuller in sound because it is more instrumentally complex; there are more stringed instruments (violins, bass, cello, etc.), and there are more voices in chorus. However, the Broadway version is lacking some of the tracks found in the movie. Yet both are truly wonderful, and therefore, I suggest getting both if you are able. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the original soundtrack to the movie and start there. But the Broadway version is certainly worthy of attention and applause.

I am so thankful for this movie that was made and the music as well. What a wonderful breath of fresh air! Thanks to all the producers, actors, and to Glen and Marketa! Such a beautiful creation you've made! BRILLIANT ARTISTRY!

I have a lot of music. Probably more than I can give a proper listen to. Let's just call it a sickness I don't want to recover from. I had even given The Frames a listen back towards the beginning of their career. Nothing really prepared me for this. I saw the movie first. I never buy soundtracks and I bought this one immediately. Glen Hansard's character loses what he believes is the love of his life. He pours out his grief and and anguish in these songs. The songs he sings at night on the streets of Dublin. The days are left for songs that people recognize and have a better chance of earning some money. His music touches the heart of a Czech immigrant who's a talented musician in her own right and she helps him realize his dream of recording his music. He has his girl in London and she has a husband who didn't come to Ireland with her. Despite their commitments, there's an almost unspoken realization that true love may be standing right in front of them. Every bit of the heart, soul, warmth, humor and gentle sadness of the film is captured in the music of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Hansard is a poet and the amount of emotion that he wrings out of each and every song is incredible. Irglova is a talented musician and lyricist who's voice wraps around Hansard's perfectly. I can't recommend just a few tracks, it's all good here. if you don't come away thinking that "Falling Slowly" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, I don't know what I can do for you. Then you'll listen repeatedly to "When Your Mind's Made Up" , "Leave", "Trying To Pull Myself Away", "All The Way Down", "Once" and "Say It To Me Now". You'll find yourself seeking out The Swell Season which is Glen, Mar and members of Glen's long time and phenomenally talented band, The Frames. Then you'll turn back to The Frames themselves and memorize "Star, Star", "Pavement Tune", "Revelate", "What Happens When The Heart Just Stops", "Red Chord". 'The Stars Are Underground", "God Bless Mom", "Rent Day Blues" and a lot, lot more. Right here, you have a chance to watch your favorite movie, listen to the best soundtrack I've ever heard and acquire a couple of favorite bands. What more could you ask for?

I love love love this movie and I love love love the music. It is one of my top favorite movies for so many reasons, one of them obviously being the music.

Glen Hansard's voice is so full-bodied and powerful. It really complements and contrasts well with Marketa Irglova's haunting (in a good way) voice. All of Marketa's emotions lay just below the surface of her voice when she sings. She doesn't just flat out give you all the emotion. She gives just enough and makes you, as the listener, work/feel for the rest and I love this. I love that the complete package of emotion in her songs involve the listener actually feeling the song, linking the lyrics, tempo, melody, etc. all together. I really don't know how to explain it very well and I'm sure I just confused everyone. One last try: It's like Marketa gives just enough emotion in her singing, not giving it all away for free, and leaves the listener salivating for just a tiny bit more, in a good way. And to me, this is perfect.

All of the songs on this album are truly amazing. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the song from scene at night where Glen first meets Marketa, Say It To Me Now, simply because it is so powerful. When I first saw it in the movie, it left me speechless. That scene between Glen and Marketa marked the point when I knew this movie would make it into my top favorite movies of all time.

So a little bit of background on me. To me, life would not be life without music. I write and produce music of similar style (powerful, climatic, sometimes haunting), so I really relate to Once.

The emotions of the music (and movie) is really what draws me in. If you love powerful music this is for you.

Bin auf diese beiden Ausnahme-Musiker eigentlich nur durch Zufall gestossen. Habe mir zuerst das Album der beiden gekauft, aber auf dem Soundtrack sind noch andere Lieder drauf die nicht auf dem Album sind. Sind zwar nicht viele, aber es rentiert sich.

Zur Musik! Ich weiß gar nicht mehr wie oft ich die CD jetzt nun gehört habe, aber ich kann einfach nicht anders. Die beiden liefern hier einfach etwas ab, was wohl nicht mehr von dieser Welt ist. Man könnte meinen die beiden sind schon seit hunderten von Jahren ein Paar, so perfekt passen die beiden musikalisch zusammen. Es ist echt beeindruckend wie die Stimmen harmonieren und das mit so viel Gefühl, dass es einem das Wasser in die Augen treibt!!

Ich habe schon viel Musik gehört und viele CD's im Regal stehen, aber diese CD steht bei mir ganz weit vorne und immer griffbereit!

Die beiden brauchen einen Vergleich mit Damien Rice und Lisa Hannigan nicht zu scheuen, obwohl man hier auch die Musiker nicht vergleichen kann! Ich persönlich finde die Musik von Glen Hansard und Marketa Irglova noch etwas intensiver und melodischer!!

Die CD ist super aufgenommen, da gibt es nicht's zu bemängeln - genauso wie es sein soll! Sollte jemand daheim einen Röhrenverstärker und entsprechende Hornlautsprecher (ich darf mich glücklich schätzen) besitzen, kommt er in den vollen Genuß dieser CD. Dann kommt die Musik gleich nochmal so schön rüber und unterstreicht die gefühlvollen und warmen Stimmen der beiden!

Mehr gibt es jetzt nicht mehr zu sagen, ich muss wieder zurück vor die Anlage um weiterzuhören. Eins kann ich für mich persönlich noch sagen. Diese beiden Künstler muss ich unbedingt noch in "echt" hören!!!

Also kaufen, auf die Lieferung warten, einlegen und in eine andere Welt voller Gefühle wie Schmerz, Leid, Freude und Liebe eintauchen.
