The book really benefits from the fabulous illustrations of C. Walter Hodges. My copy is the original 1958 version, but I doubt it really varies from this "later" version.
And the various punch lines?
"If you try to please everybody, you please nobody."
"Only I can cure my own folly."
"Oh, I wish I had them back again!"
"Rising painfully to his feet, the hunter limped out of the forest, a sad but wiser man."
There are a couple of tales with Old Testament references (Noah, Solomon).
My parents read it to me as a child and I delighted in the fantasy aspects, not really getting the wisdom. As an adult, the wisdom of each story is subtle but profound. Okay, maybe not subtle at all. This is a book that grandparents should buy for their kids who just had kids.
