Ok, perhaps I was wrong. This one was not just clever, the sex scene was HOT! I didn't know I could get so giddy about a short. I mean I troll through Ellora's Cave like a silly teenager, but no `quickie' I have gotten from there has had the entertainment value that this one had.
The beginning I wasn't totally sure about, it was first person and I was like "Wait, oh, I see, teehee, that's clever!" They always say write what you know and all I can say is that Kami Cummings totally knows what she's doing. I liked every character in the story, even the small little taste I got of some of them. I knew that this had to have a twist or some flipped ending, and when I got to it, I think my jaw dropped and I laughed out loud. I know I should have figured it out, but I think I was so invested and looking at the percentage mark on my kindle that I was like "No, no, no! Over too soon! Over too SOOOOONNN!!!!"
Pardon, my improper grammar in this review but I am totally excited about this, I would recommend this to everyone on my blogger, Goodreads, Shelfari, and who follows me on twitter. You really can't lose either way. It is a quick read, I read it in under an hour, and that is with a seven year old home for summer poking at me. And it is only 99 cents on Amazon! Oh, yes, I said 99 cents on Amazon! I can't wait for a full length from this author!
Ok, I am done gushing, now GO GET IT!
One To Die For was somewhat of a dark but yet light-hearted short story. You will understand the 2 head saying when you read the book, as explaining them will give to much of the story away. It starts out with part of the epilogue, with the main character, Russell and/or" "Herr Schmidt," reliving the euphoria of part of his life, but then reverts back to the beginning of his story. Russell and Marty were childhood friends until Russell's parents were killed. He went to live with his grandmother who lived in Germany and learned how to speak fluent German. When his grandmother passes a way, he inherits a large sum of money and the Gothic mansion they lived in. But he knew his funds would not last long, so he ask his friend Marty to move in. Russell used some of his money to help Marty start an internet business, and later he became Russell's manager. Marty, in turn, help Russell to become a writer of vampire books. And both of them are womanizers, but Russell seems to be more sex-crazed than Marty. This is where the story gets interesting.
The questions throughout the story was "Is Russell a vampire or is it all an act to sell his books?" " Who are the two women he keeps encountering and why does he keep crossing paths with them?" Sorry I can't answer those questions; you must read the story to get the answers. As the author said there is no HEA in this story and the sex scenes are not bad, but they are hot, esp the anal sex. Be advised that if you are not into this kind of sex scenes then do not read this book.
I give this book 4.5 because it was a good short story, even though I solved the twist before it was revealed. I just can't pinpoint what is bothering me about this story, but that is why I did not give it 5 stars. Just figured it out, the whole story just runs together, jumping from scene to scene causing confusion in certain areas of the story.
Here is a synopsis provided by the author for One To Die For. Fame, fortune, and females are the life for Russell Schmidt! However, reaching rock-star status through his self-published vampire novels isn’t enough. Trailing after a mysterious woman in red leads to heights of ecstasy he’s never known. But Russ soon finds the tables turned, and his next one-night stand may be to die for!
This is a short, erotic horror/romance story with a punch, told from Russell’s POV in first person. There’s not a HEA, which is disappointing, but I love Russell’s comeuppance. It was definitely justified.
