What I found was the take of Morgan. Mother, wife, relatively newly back into the workforce. Accompanying that upheaval in her professional life is an equal yet opposite upending of her personal life. Established roles and expectations in her marriage have been turned on their ear, and things within her marriage are unsettled at best. So much so that her and her husband Reid didn't even exchange a kiss goodbye on the day she went to work and didn't make it home.
A richly dark and intensely compelling read, this first entry in The Game of Life series follows not only Morgan as her day quickly escalates from bad to horrifyingly worse, but alternates that with glimpses of her husband who, for being so much better off than she, still finds himself making his way through one of the worst days of his life.
With recriminations and second guessing, confusion, doubt and one seriously deranged individual, this book delves deeply into that emotion encapsulated in the title ... fear.
For whatever it might say about me, I kind of loved it.
One Fear hits the ground running with an opening scene where the leading lady, Morgan, has been kidnapped by a psychopath and is about to start a run for her life. Brooks easily takes you by the throat and slams you into a web of heart pounding terror then steps back to show you how it came about. This is a novella (or opening installment) of a series and while Belle sets the stage for what is surely a twisting and horrifying tale, she managed, quite handily, to create an eerie and frightening stage indeed. This will read quickly not only because of length but because it is so well written, so engaging that you will not be able to look away.
I look forward to the next installment, eagerly.
I'm so anxious for the second one because it just cannot end that way. I knew going in it was going to drive me crazy, but the not knowing what is really going on, the not knowing what is going to come next. Belle Brooks is going to drive me crazy. She's going to have be begging for book two. But maybe that's the point? She gives us a taste of this addictive new world and then before we can really sink our teeth into it she takes it away.
Whatever the case, I applaud her and will sit here not so patiently waiting for the next one.
When I bought this book, I was really unsure of what I was getting, but I figured for $0.99 I wouldn’t be out much if it was a disappointment. Let me tell you, it most assuredly was NOT. I would pay significantly more for this story. It was a well written piece. The characters were developed well, the story-line hooks you to the point you don’t realize you’re nearing the end until BLAM book over. I really enjoy these types of books, the psychological thrillers that twist and torment you. I also really like the alternating points of view. Ms. Brooks is very talented in that her writing evokes such fear over what is going to happen. It just grabs a hold and won’t let go.
Trying to figure out who the Wolf is and why he has targeted Morgan, as well as trying to figure out how she can beat him at his games, kept me glued to the story. His sadistic statements gave me chills and I was glad to be reading this story while my husband was in the house. The dark night will be a little scarier for me, for at least a little while. Belle Brooks seems to have included SEVERAL of my worst fears in One Fear.
Highly recommended for those that love mystery and suspense, and I would also suggest reading it with the lights on.
