It's perfect for multiple food allergies! My daughter has 6 of the top 8 plus many others allergies. We'd have to have a library of books on milk allergy, nut allergy, peanut allergy, soy allergy, mustard allergy, sesame allergy etc. 'One of the Gang' does not mention specific food allergies, but gently tells and shows kids things they need to do to stay safe. (i.e. eat only your own snack, cupcake etc)
I love the fact that this book does NOT use a talking animal character to play the part of a food allergic child. Food allergies are serious and the actual photos show this happens to real people AND it shows kids that they're not alone.
There are many messages that open the eyes of adults such as grandparents. Our in laws read this in amazement and when my daughter started sharing her true feelings, I think they understood food allergies and how isolating they can be for the very first time!
The book is worth its weight in gold for this reason alone!
It does it all.
It shows kids what they need to do to without scaring them:
Bringing their own snack to school
Not sharing food
Bringing their own treat to birthday parties
The BEST parts are the pictures of real food allergic adults!
SuperBowl Champ Jerome Bettis
NHL Hockey Star Tom Poti
ABC News Anchor Lori Stokes
Dr Robert Wood (famous allergist) etc.
Kids will love knowing that these successful adults have food alleriges just like they do!
This book is also a clever tool for teachers, relatives and other caregivers because it shows how including these kids (with peanut allergy or other food allergies) can make their day. (Excluding them is hurtful)
The pictures show how good it feels to be "One of the Gang" and this is something that every parent wants for their child.
If you want your food allergic child to be as happy and resiliant as possible, I'd highly recommend this book.
Here is what I think is most important about this book. More than any other allergy book we have read, this book prompted discussions about the emotions that go along with being a child with a food allergy. My daughter talked a lot about the page that says, "You might wish that you didn't have food allergies and that you could eat whatever you wanted." Her favorite photo is one of happy children eating ice pops, with the caption, "When other grown-ups bring treats that are safe for you, it's terrific!"
This is the best food allergy book for children we've read--and we've read a LOT.
