This was a it of a slow starter for me, I took a little while to bond with these characters but once I got back into the swing of Lisa Jewell's signature slow drip of information when it comes to getting to know people in her books I race through the rest of the novel.

I loved the mystery surrounding Bee as a character. I feel like we never really got to know exactly what makes her tick and so she is someone who has stuck with me long after reading the book. I found it so intriguing that Bee's family didn't really know her either and I like that Ana really tried hard to bond with a sister who was so absent.

Ana on the other hand never really knew herself. She has played it safe when it comes to life and so looking into Bee's past really does help with her own future. I like that this was a coming of age novel if you're jut following Ana's story because she is a good person and I really enjoyed watching adventure allow her to blossom!

The idea of whether we really know those around us is fully explored in this novel and I think that although this was written a few years ago now, it is still timely and relevant today. There are many moments of Lisa Jewell's signature writing and character description and so if you have enjoyed her other novels, I am sure you will enjoy this one too.

I only found this author a year ago,now looking for everything she’s written. This book started with a blast of action, and just kept coming. Couldn’t wait to find find out what would happen to the sisters… and flint, lol, the mother, gill.realistic language (which doesn’t bother me) ….the story isn’t meant for a prissy reader…it’s about hardcore conflicts, real people who are struggling with real problems….and real resolutions. Couldn’t put it down, and loved every minute of the journey. Great read

"One-hit Wonder" by Lisa Jewell is a story of a young country woman whose life changed by an incident. That incident was the dead of her half-sister, an once famous pop singer. The young woman used to live with her unhealthy mother in the countryside. No boyfriend, no job, and being controlled by her mother, she found her life boring. Her self-esteem was very low and she was very afraid to leave home. When the shocking news of the dead of her half sister arrived, her mother ordered her to go to London to collect all her sister's stuff and come back in two days. However, when she came to London, she found out that the lifestyle in there did not rejected her like that in the small town. Also, she discovered some facts that led her to a conclusion that her siser had a secret life. With the help of her sister's best friend and butler, she finally found the secret.
After the incident, she grew up and was more confident than before. She decided to stay in London and started her career. Meanwhile, her mother became less demanding and found a companion.
The reason why I give this book 3 stars is it contains bad language. Usually, the author used some four-letter words as a part of the charaters's speech and somehow, she overused them. I felt annoyed when reading them. Moreover, the plot is guessable, which makes the story less interesting.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from this book, but whatever it was, I got more. This is not your typical Brit Chic Lit. This is the story of Ana, shy, quiet, self-effacing who is sent to London by her overbearing mother to pack up the belongings of her half-sister Bee who has died suddenly. Ana barely knew her half-sister who was several years old than she, but had always imagined that her life was glamorous and fun-filled. But after arriving in London, going through Bee's things and meeting
some of Bee's friends, a different picture of Bee emerges. Ana finds that Bee's life seems to be a mystery on top of a mystery. She becomes determined to find out all she can about Bee's life and what led her to suicide. This story is beautifully told. I couldn't stop reading, although did not want the book to end. This is the one of the best books I've read in a long time.

The second half of this book is absolutely 5 star worthy but I knocked a star off the overall rating just because it did take me so long to get into it that I almost gave up on it. None of the characters are really likable at first and the story seems to take forever to get anywhere. Once it does finally pick up though it is so worth it and I truly grew to love Ana, Flint, Lol, and little Xander. I was almost sad when it ended because by the end I was so deeply emotionally invested and just wasn't ready to say goodbye to my new friends and their tragic but somehow amazing world. If you can deal with a slow start I would absolutely recommend this book.

I can see from reading the reviews that this book attracts somewhat polarised views. I fall somewhere in between but definitely leaning to the positive. I hadn’t realised it was an early book of Lisa Jewel. My kindle version didn’t show publication dates. There are some awful characters, the mother!! But it is not hard to read and it does make some pertinent points about young aspiring “celebrities”, and old “has beens”!!! The book predates social media as we know it today. Bee read her publicity in the Times!! It would be infinitely more savage today. It is however worth a read

If you are into Romance, you might like this. Very typical story of unconfident girl browbeaten by evil mother but at last attracting the love of handsomest guy in London. The mystery is quite good but sadly drowning in saccharine goop. Well written, because it's Lisa. But keep a barf bag handy for the last few scenes.
