My prayer is that more authors realize that vulgarity does not constitute good literature and write for a better audience.

If you are squeamish or have a weak stomach, you might want to skip this serial murder/police procedural. This book may intrigue and/or disgust, so it’ll help to compartmentalize.
I liked the complex but disturbing storyline that begins with a kidnapping and quickly escalates to murder(s). Logically there are few good suspects for the initial kidnapping, but the author does a good job of hiding the criminal, who blends in during half the book. The murder scenes are gruesome, and the wounds/damages are described in detail—as are S&M-associated torture/murder scenes, with secateurs. This police procedural has a noticeable lack of said procedures. Readers are told—via phone calls from SOCO personnel and police surgeon—about lab tests and other findings.
Author Wes Markin overpopulates this book—especially the first 25%—with police and affiliated personnel. There are about 50 characters, so I’m glad I read the Kindle version. The characters are sometimes well-developed, but police personnel are drawn rather sketchily. DCI Michael Yorke, SIO of the kidnap and murder cases, is given a few distinctive characteristics, but Lacey Ray is almost lovingly described down to her “diamond encrusted belly-button ring.”
The ending is incomplete, leaving a major thread hanging. Overall, this is a solid police procedural, and I plan to read other books in this series.
Warning:
Extreme violence, OTT animal torture and killing, grisly death scenes, Hannibal/Mason Verger scene, NSFW language, sex & BDSM

When you have generation after generation of inbred psychotic pig farmers, you can usually predict problems. Toss in grudges, infidelity, greed, and just plain nastiness, and you've got a. powderkeg.

Once I started reading One Last Prayer for the Rays, I could not put this book down until I got to the breathtaking end of this Chilling Thriller!!!!! This book kept me on the edge of my seat with such fast paced, well developed action. It had lots of great "twists" in the plot to keep me quessing and that is exactly what I am looking for in a good crime thriller. Wes Markin has really nailed it here with this book. The characters are so believable, so frighteningly evil and yet they totally "grabbed" me and DCI Yorke is a fabulous believable crime fifgter. I know that I will read more books from this author and I hope to see more of DCI Yorke!!! I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a fast paced "scary" thrill ride of a book that keeps the reader guessing and holding their breath until the very end. I loved how well every frightening detail was so well written and so realistic that it almost took my breath away throughout this entire book, right up to the very end scene. Great job Mr. Weskin!!!!!! I am looking forward to reading many more books by you very soon!!!!!

The narrative is a dreadful mix of thoughts, memories, observations, emotional reactions to past and present, etc., etc. all jumbled together, keeping this reader too disoriented to follow the story.

I'm not usually drawn to crime thrillers, but once I started this book I didn't want to put it down! Wes Markin has woven a thrilling tail of intrigue and terror, complete with evil villains and a likable hero. I was so surprised at the various twists and turns the story took. It definitely kept my interest from the first to the last pages!

My wife and I honeymooned in England and enjoyed Salisbury. When I realized where this book was set, I got into it quickly. But it is so gripping that I would have enjoyed it anyway. The actual cycle is intriguing, but HaymArket really excels at is depicting believable a nd interesting characters, especially among the police. A great rest.

This isn't my usual type of book , I am a follower of fact and research.
Now I am a follower of this author. I could not put this book down and when I did it was under duress . Non stop action , spine tingling discription , twists and turns everywhere.
The characters were built up slowly through the story so no long explanations when all you want to do is get on with the chase.
I cannot wait for the next book which if anything like the first will be an absolute winner.
No matter what your type this book will hold you , take you on a journey of suspense , lift you , drop you and then do it all over again .
Well done Wes
Keep them coming .

Brilliant start to a new series

Looks like there is a new sicko author in town who brings us One Last Prayer For The Rays. This is the first book in the DCI Michael Yorke which is a dark and gritty read! Those of you that read my reviews will know I love dark thrillers, in fact the darker the better for me and I have to say that the author ticked all those boxes for me with this pulse racing read!
In this story we are introduced to DCI Michael Yorke a strong lead character and follow a story about a 12 year old school boy who disappears from school. The case is not what it seems when Yorke finds himself on the hunt for the boy, after his most obvious suspect is found mutilated…..That’s just for starters!
OMG what a tense story with scenes that will make you squirm……I have to say that I am very impressed and not forgetting the fact that this is the authors debut novel. I cannot wait to move on to the second book in this series.
This story is full of horror woven into a police procedure with elements of the story reminding me of the film Wrong Turn…..LOVE IT!
Wes Markin is certainly an author to look out for. Not only is this book gripping it is full of twists and turns keeping the reader on the edge of their seat and guessing until the end. Which I highly recommend.

Not well written
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2019Verified Purchase
Bit of a disappointment with poor editing, poor grammar and proof reading. Three interesting variations on the same character’s first name comes across as sloppy work at least! Also billed as shocking and exhilarating and fails on both counts. Not very shocking albeit unpleasant reading and far from exhilarating. One small mark in it’s favour is that the author seems to have a good working knowledge of where the book is set, including the location of Wiltshire Police Headquarters. Not holding my attention much I found myself hoping the book would be over and done with rather than any potential excitement about the plot’s outcome. Any author that finishes a book and puts it on line has my respect but that respect gets a tad tarnished with lack of attention to the quality of the finished product.

This story had me sitting on the edge of my seat. DCI Michael Yorke, a brilliant detective, doesn't let anything, or anyone, deter him from solving a case - but this case is full of mystery.
A young student, Paul Ray, feeling unwell, goes to the toilet and disappears. A teacher goes to investigate and is met with a gruesome sight. Slipping and sliding in blood, the teacher expects to find an injured Paul - or a dead one. Surely a boy couldn't disappear into thin air.
Not realising this is going to be his most harrowing case, DCI Michael Yorke begins to weigh up the pro's and cons.
A stunning book which will have you turning the pages way into the night.

My first time with this author and it will probably my last if this disjointed drivel is anything to go by. I am amazed by the number of positive, even gushing accolades heaped on this novel. The book suffers badly from poor to nonexistent proof reading which has resulted in jarring inconsistences in the text. I also found it difficult to follow the characters as first names alternate wth surnames -in some instances within contiguous paragraphs. The textual issues aside, I couldn't suspend my disbelief long enough to begin to care about the main protagonists' life problems. I managed to struggle through to the end but was left dissatisfied on the whole. Tedious twaddle.
