Cannons don’t thunder, there’s nothing to plunder
I’m an over forty victim of fate” – Jimmy Buffett (A Pirate Looks At Forty)
This book is a well-crafted adventure written in a style that reminds me of Tim Cahill’s best travelogues. Set in the islands of the West Indies, not everything goes well for the author and his wife as they attempt to find their sea legs for the first time instead of a sit by the pool winter escape from Seattle’s drizzly winter.
Stopping at various points around the islands, the couple also experiences the people and landscapes. One of my favorite parts was the trip to the top of the La Soufrière volcano.
Throw in a dash of Anthony Bourdain styled food descriptions, the part about the Oistins fish fry made me want to head to Barbados right away, and I felt I could taste the Caribbean as well as see it through the author’s eyes.
So grab a shot of dark rum and set sail with “One Lousy Pirate”. Sometimes misadventures make the best stories.
Thoroughly enjoyed his travel plans and how they unfolded..
Very entertaining. Between the lines, many great tips for traveling
