Tim Weiner is the author of five books. Legacy of Ashes, his history of the CIA, won the National Book Award. His journalism on secret government programs received the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. As a correspondent for The New York Times, he covered war and terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Sudan, and other nations. He directs the Carey Institute's nonfiction residency program in upstate New York and teaches as an Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies at Princeton.

Excellent Book about Nixon, 60's, Early 70's Politics

I really enjoyed this book. I was somewhat too young to understand Watergate at the time and I mostly saw it through the historical event and the book/movie All the Presidents Men.
The book starts a little slowly with Nixon's early life and entry in to local California politics.
Ultimately that doesn't get too deep but provides a much better understanding of Nixon in his national political career.
I highly recommend reading this book if you want to understand the confluence of politics, the late 60's, and Viet Bam and how Nixon impacts the US political system to this day.

The best inside look at an amazing event in history: RMN presidency

I was 14 when Nixon resigned and the events are still memorable but only broadly - the personalities, the dying in Vietnam, the nightly news, the hearings, the final days and of course the V sign as he slipped into the chopper on this final day.

For anyone who lived through it, because of the authors access of and use of the record of history only recently available, this provides such a rich inside view of the events, from the decisions being made to the personal motivations and mindset of the player, especially Mr Nixon himself.

It’s hard to come up with a simple view of Nixon - he defies being dubbed a singular term such as devil or malevolent. His amazing understanding of so much but so little at the same time is best described as a view into that very small percentage of leaders who are trapped in the cross currents of the power, aspiration, ego and arrogance that produce such poor judgment and moral depavity that still in the eyes of the protagonist is justified.

A great read.

I was in post-graduate studies in Washington DC during the Watergate Scandal. Proximity gave me no particular advantage over the rest of the country, except that I could boast that I had voted against Richard Nixon with Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. And I was pretty sure I could run the government better than he was doing. This book has not proven me wrong.
More than forty years later a reader of this book may still be appalled by what the democratic process wrought. A drunken, power-obsessed, profoundly unhappy man had the power of life and death over the entire planet. The reader may be grateful that the democratic government survived the affair but its damage has not been undone, as Mr. Weiner shows. The Watergate Scandal -- like the other huge mistake of the 20th century, Prohibition -- left indelible scars in American politics.
Mr Weiner does not mention other catastrophes engineered by Mr. Nixon, farm subsidies that keep food prices permanently below market prices, and the decision to force his reluctant party to oppose abortion. The rift within the President's psyche became a canyon in American politics.
We may yet recover but it will take universal integrity, collective sacrifice, a deep willingness to engage the process and trust of our politicians again. .

I've hated Nixon since 1969 so this book didn't influence my opinion one way or the other. Found the book to be well researched and meticulously annotated. If you're a Nixon apologist/defender you're not going to like the book. But it's a fascinating story about the absolute corruption of a petty, vindictive man.

This is an especially good read if you are a 'true Nixon hater'--as bad as you might think he was, this book reveals depths of deception beyond your imagination. A treasure trove of Watergate-era reports have recently been 'sun shined' making this book well researched and clearly written. Kissinger also is described as a significant enabler of Nixon's delusions and as a power obsessed beneficiary. Our country was in a truly scary situation with this President wielding so much power.

Wow! This book was a tour de force on Nixon's presidency. Having lived through all of it, and believing that Nixon was indeed a paranoid individual, I was further astonished by just how off-balance he was. I learned a great deal about this time in history: the Viet Nam War, Nixon's ascension to power, how he romanced China & Russia and more. This book was very thorough & a real page tuner. Nixon was able to consolidate power within a few close advisors in his presidency, negating the power of Congress, and many members of his cabinet. It is scary to read how easily this was done. It made me very sad to realize that this man, who had so much intelligence and a very canny sense of world politics, could have gone so far down the wrong road. And this is America we are talking about.
