George Clinton's post-bicentennial message to those in the "chocolate cities" was that America could be theirs, too, without any loss of their own black, regional identities. One Nation Under a Groove remains Funkadelic's most provocative release, as well as one of the funkiest long-players released in the disco era. The band vamps on a world where people of different color play each other's songs ("Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"), lose their inhibitions (the classic title track), and bond together with the glue of shared secrets (the wonderful "Groovallegiance"). Standout: the slow-grooved "Into You," in which a lover vows to stay true or a patriot pledges devotion to a new flag--take your pick. You might think that a complex and moving ode to commitment is out of place on an album with such political overtones, but it's not. It's really the quiet-storm centerpiece. --Don Harrison --This text refers to an out-of-print edition of this title.

Wow. That is one word to describe this cd. It truly is unbelievable that they could make so many good records and help to spawn modern genres, and get virtually no credit. And if you think that nothing from today is influenced by Parliament/Funkadelic, then listen to this entire LP and write a nasty review about me. These guys were, and still are, the bomb. I swear, modern artists have all this technology and are overproduced and still can't come close to touching George and the boys. Whew!! Sorry, had to get that off my chest. This LP starts off with one the best dance songs in history (the title track). This song will have you dancing in no time, even if you can't dance. "Groovalegence" is a reggae inspired song, with some funk sprinkled in. It's pretty good. "Who Says a Funk Band" is definitely a cool track, that could put any modern "rock" band today to shame. And these guys weren't even a rock band. Another highlight is "Cholly." The bass sounds very similar to MOTHERSHIP CONNECTIONS's "Night of the Thumpasaurus Peoples". (That LP is the best funk album, by the way.) Of course, "Maggot Brain," while not originally appearing on this album, contains the best guitar solo of all time. (Mike Hampton plays it on this album, but it was Eddie Hazel who should get the credit for the great lick.) Not to mention, go ahead and get MAGGOT BRAIN cd, which is an early classic by Funkadelic. Getting off track again. So, to sum it up, this is a great LP, and it showcases a variety of sounds Funkadelic could give off. 100% P-Funk... THE BOMB!!

Make no mistake about it - Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove" is among the best funk discs ever recorded. I contains elements of the complex arrangements that made George, Bootsy and Bernie famous among today's hip-hop samplers (One Nation, Cholly, etc.). But, ONUAG adds that rock edge that make Funkadelic FUNKADELIC (Lunkmeataphobia, Maggot Brain, etc.). The Funkadelic sound is best summarized (lyrically and musically) on "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"
Ok, why do you spend the extra coin on this Japanese import? There are three VERY important reasons:
1. This CD is mastered using 20-bit sampling which creates a smoother more rich sound as compared to the standard 16-bit recording available in the US. I have both CDs and the Japanese version is noticably cleaner, louder, and smoother.
2. The 12" Version of "One Nation Under A Groove" is included. This 16+ minute track is actually the A and B side of the original 12" vinyl issue from 1977. The first 11 minutes is the remix that has been reissued on vinyl but is impossible to find on CD. The last 5 minutes is the B-side which features a slamming extended guitar solo by Mike Hampton - a must have for every collector.
3. The packaging includes full size liner notes from the original LP. The US CD only reprints portions of the original LP art. Again, a must for the true funk fan.
Get this while you can, burn a copy, and put this one away. It may pay for itself in the future.

Another solid cd from Funkadelic. Definitely for the Funkateer young or old!!! Of course the title cut "One Nation Under A Groove" is great, eventhough it is the 7:28 version, but there are other definitive jams on here. "Groovallegiance" is real low down and funky!! "Cholly" is a solid groove and gets you ready to roll. "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock" is a serious cut that demands immediate attention from the listener, because Funkadelic throws down on this one. "Lunchmeataphobia" is a real funk/rock groove that will tickle your senses. "Maggot Brain" is simply marvelous, like always, plus it is the live, "...ain't illegal yet" version. This entire CD represents the masterful composition and artistry of George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, and Gary Shider. The lyrics are pure, the melodies are solid, and the beats are simply funky. All Funkateers must have this CD, otherwise their collection is incomplete until they possess it.

BEWARE: The 2 disk, 2014 re-release DOES NOT include the 12" version of 'One Nation Under A Groove' !!!!!

"The 12" Version of "One Nation Under A Groove" is included."

Well, that's what the posted review said. But I didn't notice that the review was written April 13, 2001--yet, it was posted beneath the 2014 re-release of the product. Already having an earlier version of this disc, the only reason I purchased it was for the 12" version of 'One Nation..'.

So, if you're looking for the previously unavailable 12" version of the song--sorry to day, it's not here.
Why they couldn't include it here, I have no Idea; especially since there's at least three other previously re-released versions of this disc,
What a waste.

Well, I love the album: one of my desert island picks. I read the review by A. Fuller and got excited about improved sound quality and the 16+ minute cut of the title track (who doesn't want more funk!?). Since the product details note 1 cd and the purchase is clearly for a 2 cd reissue, I thought the A. Fuller review described the disc I purchased. So bummed when it arrived; damn--no extended cut!
