As a mystery, Inspector Mayfield is topnotch. She's tough, by the book and always works to get her man. She also has no mercy for murderers, until the person everyone thinks has done it just so happens to be someone she found herself on an adventure with earlier in her career. There are witnesses, evidence and no other suspects...but he swears he didn't do it. And just like that, Inspector Mayfield's gut has her breaking a few rules.
The pacing in the book is steady, always quick and there's always something around the next corner. Pence has done a great job of filling the novel with some very colorful characters and of keeping the reader interested until the very end of the novel. By the time the end of the novel actually comes you're like "aha!" Without spoiling the plot, I liked this novel and I want to read the next one. Good job Pence.
This is the first in the series and the first book I've read by Joanne Pence. The characters are well detailed with very human qualities. Rebecca isn't acting like you'd expect a police detective to behave, but even she knows that and can't explain how Richie can affect her behavior like he does. The pace is quick and the ending was a surprise, but made sense. An enjoyable read without graphic sex or flagrant profanity. I'll be reading more of this series.
While this is the first in the series, there is apparently a previous novella, and this book references it enough that, if you like it, you will probably want to read the prequel.
Rebecca is a by-the-book homicide detective. Richie is a rogue, with odd friends and an "interesting" past. When it looks like Richie had committed murder, he runs- and Rebecca is pulled well outside her comfort zone working with him to solve the murder(s).
Both Rebecca and Richie are very well-developed characters, and the secondary ones are complex as well- not merely plot devices, but actual people with their own agendas. This is a lot of what makes a book enjoyable for me- when the plot develops from character, instead of the characters serving only to progress the plot!
I am curious about how Rebecca's and Richie's relationship, such as it is, proceeds! There are certainly a LOT of obstacles in its way, both external and internal!
Very recommended, if you like a complex mystery that is nonetheless more focused on character development, and with a bit of romance.
