Monica Corwin delivers an interesting, suspenseful and steamy story in this modern day adaptation of Dorian Gray that will grab you by the throat and not let go until the end
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book
I love Dorian Gray. It's pretty much the only Oscar Wilde novel I own. The story has always captivated me and I always love seeing Dorian on the big
and small screens whenever someone takes the liberty to place him there. I think not too many people, other than graphic novel writers take liberties with this character nowadays and even in the graphic novel and comic book genre, he is rarely used as much as he use to be.
So, it's always a pleasure when I come across anything Dorian Gray. One Shade of Gray is what I had been looking for for years and didn't even know it. I love Ms. Corwin's fearlessness and creativity in handling these characters and their story. This book filled my interest from the first chapter. I loved the setting, loved the characters, loved the tension and all around sexiness that encompassed the mood of this book. A must read.
I really enjoyed this book. Dorian and Izzy were great characters and there were some unique twists... including something I didn't see coming but looking back I can see the foreshadowing was there. The author's take on the stresses of living forever mirrors what actual scientists and psychologists think will happen to someone forced to live more than 120 years. And the fact that the main character knows this and acknowledges it is refreshing.
I have a couple of lines that I straight out laughed out loud at like
"After she read that God's forsaken book about the sadist who shared my surname, she couldn't look at me without snickering for a week."
"The words hung there in the room, heavy and pregnant, waiting for someone to offer them a chair."
Yep.. ^_^ Great lines
It also took a refreshing and realistic look at mental health, something that is near and dear to my heart.
It's a book I definitely recommend and am happy to give it Five Stars.
*** I received an ARC from the author. Opinions expressed are my own.
Isobel Vane is a director and producer of the theatre and has worked around the globe. She is currently working in Paris on a production of Romeo and Juliet. For weeks she has felt someone following her and when she realizes who it is she confronts him and is drawn to him but he is off limits since he is her mysterious boss.
Dorian Gray is the owner of the theatre and very secretive. Very few actually know who he is or his true story. Thinking that Izzy was someone from his past, he makes it his mission to get close to her.
This story is very unique and filled with intrigue, mystery, love and some steamy sex. I highly recommend it.
While this isn't a genre I typically read, all the talk about Dorian Gray made me curious. Let me tell you, Monica Corwin did not disappoint. In One Shade of Gray, she gave us a new look at what could have happened in Dorian Gray's story and gave him a new love interest. Isobel was one of the spunkiest female leads I've ever read. She had me laughing throughout the book. She was definitely the dominant character, which was so refreshing to read. If you like well-written contemporary romances, a little fantasy, and steamy scenes, give this book a try. You won't regret it!
