My biggest complaint about this novella comes from the fact that I didn't connect with the characters. Now whether that was because I wasn't in the right mood for the book or because I'd read them out of order and hadn't previously met the characters, I'm not sure. Either way, I Just wasn't all in when it came to Rory and Max, when all signs from the blurb pointed to this being a story I'd love. Maybe my expectations were too high? I do think that maybe if I had read the books in the correct order, I would've enjoyed this a little more though. Another thing worth mentioning because it definitely impacted my enjoyment of this story — it was deceptively short. I bought the Kindle version and it ended at 58%. The rest of the file was previews, so I was more than a little disappointed by the length of this novella.
I'm in love with the Heartbreaker Bay series. Living in the greater SF Bay area (read I'm not IN the City, but close enough to visit frequently), the area the series is set in is magnificent. Ms. Shalvis' characters are always well thought out and feel like real people.
One Snowy Night is the story of Rory, who left home at 17, making her way back to her family. It's also the story of Max, who was a classmate of Rory's, and felt betrayed by Rory when she left town.
Max is going home to Lake Tahoe on Christmas Eve and has 'volunteered' to take Rory along with him, since he is literally going past her parent's home on the way. What transpires during their drive, allows unknown details of their high school years to be shared, and their true feelings to come out.
This is absolutely a stand alone novella, but you probably will understand the personal dynamics of Rory and Max a bit better if you at least read The Trouble with Mistletoe before One Snowy Night. I'm loving this series!
The story had everything I wanted from this romance trope. I really enjoyed the characters, especially Rory. Her character was almost too much to be contained in this short format, but I think it worked in the end. I liked Max too. And without his dog Carl, well, who would want a story without a lovable dog?
Again, it may have been a little short. And because of that some aspects of the story may have felt a little rushed. Overall, though, I feel like this was the enjoyable holiday read I was expecting. I am holding out hope that Rory and Max get a book of their own, or even just another novella. I’d really like to see the rest of their Christmas and young relationship.
I love Jill Shalvis. But I didn't love this story. It was way too short, and didn't have much of an ending. I learned more about Rory in previous books, and Max - well, we don't really get to know him. The writing itself is good, as always - there just wasn't enough of it. All in all, I was disappointed with this one. I wanted more.
This is just a novella so, if you haven't read the other books in the series, it might come across as a bit too insta-love because you haven't seen the hints and signs that Max and Rory have always harbored an attraction and feelings. But when you put the two of them alone in a car, it's bound to get interesting. Throw in Max's dog Carl and you have the perfect recipe for a fun, sexy, and heart-warming read.
