"When you read a Kahlen Aymes book, you know without a doubt you are headed for an epic love story. This woman can weave them into a web that you don't want to untangle from. From the Author
One Step Closer is a labor of love for me. It is my very first stand-alone novel, that I started writing back in 2014. I was in the middle of my FAMOUS NOVEL series and I had to get those out first. Since, my mother and father have had some health issues and that put me a little behind. I'm proud of this book and I'm happy to finally get it out to you.

Caleb and Wren didn’t meet under the best circumstances. They had no choice when Wrens mother, Veronica, married Caleb’s father, Edison, to live under the same roof, and be branded with the Stepbrother / stepsister titles.
After the death of his mother, and the physical and emotional withdrawal of his father in his life, Caleb had become a bitter young man, who wanted nothing to do with the new additions to his family. He knew without a doubt, the woman his father married was a money grabber, with selfish intent, but he couldn’t seem to figure out her daughter, who seemed to be the exact polar opposite of her mother. Staying away from Wren, Veronica and his father seemed to be the best solution.
Turning to fighting as a coping mechanism for his emotions, one night leads to him coming off second best, and taking a brutal beating. With his Father and step mother away, he accepts Wrens help, to nurse him back to health. Only to discover, she’s not at all as he thought her to be. This is where their relationship takes a turning point, and after a few revelations, Caleb decides that he will do whatever it takes protect Wren at all costs. However, falling in love was not on the cards.
Unfortunately, events unfold, and they are forced to lead separate lives. Leaving them with only their memories, of a time they once had together.
Their story starts off in present time, when Caleb and Wren, return to Denver for Caleb’s father funeral. After being apart for a few years, they both have reservations as to how their reunion will unfold. So many secrets have been kept and lies have been told.
Now back in each other’s lives, they’re faced with a mountain of emotions, and outside influences that will stop at nothing to try and keep them apart.
Kahlen Aymes has definitely delivered another brilliant romance, with a story that will pull on your heartstrings, with characters that you’ll love, and some you’ll love to hate.
I've been a fan of hers since I read her remembrance trilogy and have loved everything I've read of hers.
I loved this book and ignored everything until I got to the end. I think I might have found my new favorites since Ryan and Julia and I didn't think that was possible.
Dive in you won't be sorry!
In this story, we get to learn and love Cade and Wren! Their story truly is one of those that you will want to never stop reading. Cade and Wren’s story is a step-brother romance yes, but one of the best step-brother romances I have ever read. I love that Cade and Wren’s story is told how she does it with a present-day story that also has flashbacks from the past. It helps develop their story further to build upon why the situation is how it is.
I highly recommend this book because it is one I did not want to put down!
Another awesome read from Kahlen Aymes! If you have not read any of her books before, it is a great time to start!
Caleb and Wren are step brother and sister, brought together at a young age when their parents marry. Both from wealthy families, their struggle is real, Wren beacuse she is dealing with an overbearing mother and Caleb because he has never come to terms wih his father moving on from his mother. Even though they are step siblings, their feelings towards each other grow, Caleb forces himself to keep his distance, until he learns Wren's secret. One that brings out his protectiveness towards her.
Caleb is sent away, to protect Wren, but returns during a school break. His feelings for Wren have grown so much that the inevitable is due to follow. Realising what the consequences will be, Caleb leaves again.....only to return to attend the funeral of a close relative. Will his return bring out all of the old feelings he has for Wren? Will he be able to stay away from her? Will Wren be able to recover from Caleb deserting her for so much time?
This story is simply beautiful. It is the struggle of two hearts, strength and weaknesses. Kahlen Aymes ought to be congratulated for tacking such a sensitive subject in such a heartwarming way. Life has it's hurdles that are continually thrown in your way.....how you jump those hurdles is what is important. Ms Aymes has certainly jumped over those hurdles with this story and done so very successfully.
FIVE STARS from a trully grateful fan and reader.
