Product Description

Mar-Hyde One-Step Rust Converter Primer Sealer chemically reacts to convert rust into a hard, black primer sealer. Apply One-Step on rusted surfaces and rust is permanently converted and ready for primer and topcoat. One-Step Rust Converter Primer Sealer is a water-based latex containing rust modifiers, which is designed for application directly over tightly bonded rust on iron or steel. Also proven effective on new degreased or mild steel where flash-rusting has occurred. Shortly after application, the rusted surface will change form white to purple to a stable black coating. A uniform black coating indicates the complete conversion of the rust; white streaks or remaining rust indicates that an additional coat is required.

The Mar Hyde product seems superior to those products available at your local store, "duplicolor" is one I have tried that was not satisfactory. Also "Extend" rust converter was not good (breaks down in the sun). Don't just "remove loose rust"; Sand it down until only the pits are rusty. If you can leave a margin of clean metal around the spot. Degrease the area with automotive type paint prep degreaser. If you're really anal you can use Phosphoric Acid treatment on the area first. Brush on the Mar Hyde. Work it into the pits and area using an old toothbrush or one of those cheap steel wire "toothbrushes". The more time you spend scrubbing the better the result. Let the MH dry....directions say second coat in 30 min. Do that, but don't get carried away by over applying. Otherwise it takes too long to dry. I think it says 10 hours before top coating. If you get rain on it before fully dry or if application is too thick, you will get a lot of bleeding and black runs on you project. I scuffed the surface with a red Scotchbrite pad before top coating then degreased again, then top coated. Don't keep applying it "until it turns black", otherwise you will have too much on there. Some of it will turn black quickly and the rest will take hours. Areas that were unrusted clean metal will stay shiny and have a clear coating on top of it. After drying you will have a shiny black area with a glossy finish and the area will have some kind of a cleaer sealing substance on it. You get quite a lot of coverage out of a pint. All these kinds of products are problematical in my experience.Read more ›

I live in an area where cars rust at a pretty alarming rate, so I often need to treat the rust to prevent it from getting out of hand. This product is the only rust converter I have ever found that you simply brush two coats on (about 30 minutes apart) and walk away. Once it has cured, it is rock hard, and requires basically no prep before priming and painting. I recommend this stuff completely.

very good and does what it says converts ugly rust to a dark shinny material. East to paint over with Rust-Oleum 7727502 Stops. I used a brush for the pain and had NO bristle marks with a fin hair brush.
