One Vote Away: How a Single Supreme Court Seat Can Change History Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 6,367

** WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER ** USA TODAY BESTSELLER ** PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY BESTSELLER ** NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER **

With a simple majority on the Supreme Court, the left would have the power to curtail or even abolish the freedoms that have made America a beacon to the world. We are one vote away from losing our most precious constitutional rights.

As a Supreme Court clerk, solicitor general of Texas, and private litigator, Ted Cruz played a key role in some of the most important legal cases of the past two decades.

In
One Vote Away, you will discover how often the high court decisions that affect your life have been decided by the narrowest of margins. One vote preserves your right to speak freely, to bear arms, and to exercise your faith. One vote will determine whether your children enjoy their full inheritance as American citizens.

God may endow us with "certain unalienable rights," but whether we enjoy them depends on nine judges—the "high priests" who have the last say in our system of government. Drawing back the curtain of their temple, Senator Cruz reveals the struggles, arguments, and strife that have shaped the fate of those rights. No one who reads
One Vote Away can ever again take a single seat on the Supreme Court for granted.

Sen. Ted Cruz represents 30 million Texans in the U.S. Senate as a passionate fighter for limited government, national security, and economic growth. He has authored dozens of legislative measures that have been signed into law, including expanding 529 college savings accounts to allow parents to save for K–12 public, private, and religious education, repealing Obamacare’s individual mandate, imposing sanctions on terrorists who use civilians as human shields, designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, targeting Putin’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline through multiple bills that halted construction and kept it stalled, reauthorizing and reforming NASA, holding dictatorships in South America accountable, ensuring the availability of additional records to help solve Civil Rights cold cases, and ending the Department of Defense’s unjust COVID-19 vaccine mandate. He is also leading the fight in the Senate to support Texas jobs, hold Big Tech accountable to the American people, secure the border, fundamentally reassess the U.S.-China relationship and hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable for covering up the coronavirus pandemic, committing human rights atrocities, and engaging in censorship, propaganda, and espionage in the United States.

In addition to serving in the Senate, Sen. Cruz co-hosts the podcast Verdict with Ted Cruz, where he breaks down the most important news stories of the day and what they mean for the American people. He is also the author of three New York Times Bestsellers. A Time for Truth: Reigniting the Promise of America details his journey as the son of a Cuban immigrant who grew up in Texas and was elected to the United States Senate. One Vote Away: How a Single Supreme Court Seat Can Change History explains what happens behind the scenes at the Supreme Court when our constitutional rights are at stake. In the book, Sen. Cruz examines eight constitutional issues and landmark Supreme Court cases that every American should know about, almost all of which he helped litigate. Nearly all of the cases discussed in the book were decided by just one vote. In his book Justice Corrupted: How the Left Weaponized the Legal System, Sen. Cruz lays out how the left has used the mechanisms of government to target their political opponents, especially under Presidents Obama and Biden.

Sen. Cruz is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He is a former law clerk to Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and former solicitor general of Texas. He has argued nine cases before the Supreme Court. In November of 2018, he was re-elected to the Senate by the people of Texas.

Sen. Cruz sits on four committees—the Foreign Relations Committee; Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee; Judiciary Committee; and Rules Committee. He serves as the Ranking Member on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. In the Judiciary Committee, he is the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on The Constitution.

'One Vote Away' by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is an exceptionally important book regarding the Supreme Court.

As we all know, Supreme Court confirmation battles have become increasingly vile. That was not always the case. Leftists have made this such an extremely nasty experience by concocting false allegations and anything else that they think may work to derail nominees that they consider to be conservative because they rely on the courts to fight battles for things that they cannot win in the political arena.

Sen. Cruz goes through a lot of the history of confirmation battles, particularly since the smearing or 'borking' of Judge Robert Bork. He also delineates the difference in the success rate of Democrats vs. Republicans in naming judges who will stay faithful to the expectations of their supporters. Many who are nominated by Republicans end up trying to curry favor with the DC cocktail party circuit and the media and become huge disappointments.
Judges such as Earl Warren, William Brennan, Anthony Kennedy, and John Roberts have succumbed to that temptation. The jury is still out on Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, although both have disappointed with some pathetic decisions so far.

The author has two pieces of advice for presidents who want to nominate those who will stay faithful to the Constitution: 1) Make sure the nominee has a proven track record of being faithful to the Constitution, and 2) Has endured pounding criticism, but has stood firm.

I strongly recommend this for anyone interested in the critical nature of Supreme Court (and lower court) nominations.
Justices such as Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito have really stood out in remaining faithful.

Hopefully presidents who want to select those who will remain steadfast to the founding principles of our nation will follow the senator's advice.

Ted Cruz writes a fantastic, easily understood ACCOUNT of his brilliant understanding of the law. He will one day be either a great President himself or a Supreme Court justice himself.

Classic, simple, everyday direct language revealing the basic facts about the unending political, public assault on our Constitution and fundamental human rights protected by our BIll of Rights, issue by issue. This is the best thing on these great topics I've ever ever read or heard of. Buy or borrow it now and read it.

It is a detailed, accurate, unflattering review of today's Democrats, the Democrat Party, and those who support and aid them and what they have done and are trying to do to shred our Constitution. If you love our Constitution and our Bill of Rights and want to keep them instead of having them snatched away from you, you will see by reading it just how far the Left -- that is, the Democrats in and armed with political power -- has gone and wishes to go to take them away from you. It is not mere political drivel. It is a simple, direct report on how things are and how they got that way. l am a lawyer, though an old one, retired now. You need not be one to learn, as I have in great detail by reading this book, how dreadful and powerful the relentless assault on our basic rights really is -- not just in Congress, but even within our Supreme Court. Shocking. Frightening. For your own sake and the sake of your children, and to help preserve our country, READ THIS BOOK NOW! DO IT BEFORE YOU CAST YOUR VOTE!

I wasn't thinking of getting this book until I read how hate-filled this book was. I needed to see for myself. Don't believe the haters. This is a well written book. Part personal memoir, part history of the supreme court. Even rabid leftists wouldn't think this book is hate filed. My conclusion is that the reviewers who said so had not read it. They wouldn't agree with it, but, for them, it would be interesting oppo research. Here are the chapters:

1. Religious Liberty
2. School Choice
3. Gun Rights
4. Sovereignty
5. Abortion
6. Free Speech
7. Crime, Law and Order, Capital Punishment
8. Democracy and the Electoral Process

The only topics that would truly anger a leftist are Abortion and, to the extent that it touches on gay marriage, Religious Liberty, though after dealing with it in the introduction discussing Obergefell, he doesn't bring it up again. Sure, they are all controversial, but none of the others are going to elicit a visceral hate response. At no time does he engage in anything hateful. He is respectful to his political opponents.

To conservatives, spend some time with a great conservative thinker, hearing his thoughts on the major issues of the day as well as his own personal experiences.

To leftists, give this book a try. If you then want to post a scathing review, then post away. But posting a review without having read the review is a transparent attempt that will probably backfire. The book is not poisonous. If you are sincere in your leftism, it won't convert you. But it might make you a better advocate for your cause, since you will know that much more about the conservative take on issues and you will be able to construct better arguments taking those ideas into account. Borrow it from a friend, if you don't want to "support" Mr. Cruz. If people spent more time reading what the other side had to say, our political discourse would be orders of magnitude more interesting and more beneficial. And less contentious. We need that these days.

I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a compelling page turner full of personal and historical anecdotes, from one of the most prolific solicitor general's of our recent history...
