So, Sara Wilde is commissioned to bring back a certain magical artifact that just happens to be right smack in the middle of Rio de Janiero's big Carnival. It is definitely One Wilde Night as she fights off an Amazon fertility god's death cult and other operatives hired to go after the same artifact. Sara has guts and grits and a wry humor.
The story drops the reader right into Sara's adventure and there is a constant feeling that this isn't the first installment in the series, but I wasn't confused so much as I knew that Sara was already established in her chosen vocation and her world of magic will have to be explained over time. I had the impression that some people were magic wielders and others were not. That those who were not were mostly ignorant of the group that are. Sara's brand of magic is interesting. She is a tarot card reader and uses this gift to help her find the stuff she is hired to go after and also gives her a little heads up when she's skating into danger.
There is a great chase scene, lots of action, and quiet the steamy psychic encounter that promises more to come with the enigmatic Magician for the rest of the series.
All in all, I had a great time with this intro to the series and look forward to the rest of Sara's adventures. Those who like action-packed, steamy Urban Fantasy should give this freebie intro a test drive for the Immortal Vegas series.
Wilde Card ( book .5) & Getting Wilde (book 1)
by Jenn Stark
Genre Paranormal (ish)
5 stars hands down!
Super important to read the books in order I must say. There are minor ending cliff hangers, so the books can be read by themselves, but you get so much more out of it if you read them in order.
This books starts off quite risqué I might say. Having no idea what the books was about I was quite floored at the beginning opening chapter. It was basically your typical orgy without telling you about the sex, just a ton of naked bodies. I almost didn’t lost interest in reading it at first because it was so very … out there in terms of my normal reading at first. BUT, I am so glad I stuck with it. As a matter of fact the person I was reading to in the car lost interest in the book very quickly. So I am very glad I stuck with it passed the first half of the first chapter.
Sara Wilde is a girl who is of the connected community. Which means she is psychic or has some sort of psychic abilities. She has some serious drama in her past you don’t get to know about in the first book, but you begin to in the second (book 1). The whole premise of the book is she is a finder of stolen or powerful artifacts. She is paid SERIOUS funds to do so. She uses these funds to send to Father Jerome who in turn helps uses the money to find missing kids or people who are connected. The connected are stolen and used by powerful people who want extra power.
In this book she is trying to get this necklace from this Goddess (people believe she is) for her boss who gets these powerful artifacts off the street. This artifact is trying to be stolen from other people as well and it is the trials of her trying to outwit and maneuver these other people. However while doing so she meets the Magician.
This is where the books started to take an amazing turn for me.
So, I am going to start to merge into the next book with this one…
Who is The Magician…The Devil…The Empress…The Emperor and so on… The major arcane of a tarot deck.
In both books Sara uses tarot to read where to make her next move. The Magician is the head of the council that Sara begins to help. These people are who keep balance in magic. Then there is SANCTUM who is the bad guy who wants to kill all of the council. Sara continues to find artifacts, but now is doing so for The Magician who has countless funds to help her with her mission. However, she has a hard time working with him because the sexual tension is so intense she can’t even think straight when he is in her head. And I do mean in her head. He has the ability to speak to her in her mind. But also can touch her body and see what she sees all through her.
In book 1, a new character emerges to throw sort of a kink into the works. The Devil shows his beautiful face. He is neither good nor bad, just indifferent and honest.
I can’t even begin to say why I love these books. They are so unique in their type that it made me love them even more. There is allot going on all the time so you are constantly wanting to pick the book back up. I have a hard time sleeping because I fall asleep reading, wake up and starting reading again because I didn’t want to stop to begin with. LOVE THESE BOOKS!!! I bought all of them!
I read a lot of fantasy, paranormal, romance and sci-fi and this series is one that really is a great mix of all my favorites. You have really well done characters and lots of mysteries to explore.
I really love a strong female lead character. Sara is a great character and really makes this series exciting. She takes incredible risks in the hopes of helping protect children being hunted because they have magic. She is funny and brave and very confused about what she should do. She is being taunted by The Magician. He wants to understand her and maybe even own her. Their chemistry is amazing and really heats up the story.
I read some of the other reviews and was surprised by some of them. I am not sure what they were looking for in a book but I don't want to be told everything if the book is part of a series. I like how the author is revealing a little more about the characters with each book. There are hints too of some of what is to come but you have to read carefully. I have now read three of the books in the series in addition to this novella and I can tell you that you definitely want to keep reading. It gets more interesting and many of your questions do get answered as the series continues. It still offers plenty of surprises and I highly recommend it.
This idol chasing magical treasure hunt is sure to capture you in a world shrouded in the arcane.
I'm very excited to see what Stark has in store for us. If there were a pre-order available for the next book, I would have already ordered it.
