I am baffled and frustrated by all of the good reviews this flatware has received. Baffled because I received this set in early April and less than two months later the majority of the pieces have rust spots - which only continue to appear. Frustrated because I put stock in the positive comments, which ultimately led me to make the purchase. The flatware does look nice and it is sturdy and solid, but it rusts, which far outweighs any positive aspect. There is a reason the set is so cheap...it is cheap.

Sorry, I'm about to write a review on a product I do NOT own (but was thinking of buying). I did remember seeing these in a store a couple years back, and they did feel really good in the hand, though.

But the main point of my posting is to help people understand all the issues about stainless steel rusting or not rusting. This is a great FAQ from Specialty Steel Industry of North America. ([...]):
---------------
1. What makes stainless steel stainless?

Answer: Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 % chromium. It is this element that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a complex chrome-oxide surface layer that is invisible but strong enough to prevent further oxygen from "staining" (rusting) the surface. Higher levels of chromium and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance this surface layer and improve the corrosion resistance of the stainless material. See the "Stainless Steel Primer" for more information.

2. What is the difference between 18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel?

Answer: The first number is the amount of chromium that is contained in the stainless, i.e., 18 is 18% chromium. The second number is the amount of nickel, i.e., 8 stands for 8% nickel. So 18/8 means that this stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 18/10 is 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The higher the numbers the more corrosion resistant the material. 18/0 is a misleading designation. Both 18/8 and 18/10 contain nickel and are part of the grade family "300 series" stainless. 18/0 means that there is 18% chromium but zero nickel. When there is no nickel the stainless grade family is the "400 series".

When my finance and I were setting up a house, I found some Oneida on clearance at a store going out of business. I bought it for a steal and was very happy. But as time went on, spoons were lost, forks misplaced, etc and we were frequently running out of silverware between dishwasher runs. So here we are a couple years later I decided to get another set. I purchased this as it looked the most similar to what we had and were happy with.

Boy was I wrong! This is WAY nicer than what we had--much sturdier and so pretty! Even my husband, who isn't known for his his attention to details such as silverware, commented on how much he liked it. We both love it. We aren't fancy people (no fancy china or anything) but this will look nice for those few dinner parties we do host. Plus it makes scooping out hard ice cream and serving foods much easier. It is simple, yet elegant and feels great in your hand--nice weight, but not unwieldly.

In fact, we were SO pleased with the new set that we decided to get another set with some Christmas $ and give the old set away. However, I paid $54 for the 8-person/45-piece set on Dec 8, 2010 (with free shipping) on Amazon and here we are on Dec 26th and it has now jumped to over $90 when you factor in shipping through Target! I was disappointed and although I was happy with it, I'm not willing to pay almost double less than a month later for the same exact product. My advice would be to add it to your cart and wait for it to be sold by Amazon again in the $50-60 range and snap it up!

I have a set of Oneida Mooncrest for four, and I ordered this set to have more place settings. My original set was made in Indonesia in May 2010, and it is wonderful. It has a nice heavy hand. It is elegant enough to be used for a fancy dinner, yet plain enough to be used for every day. The set I ordered from Amazon.com was made in China in February 2009. Some pieces have pocks in the metal. Some pieces of the same type - ie. salad forks, dinner spoons - are different sizes, thicknesses, and shapes. I didn't even unpack all the pieces because I was so disappointed. I think it is because of poor quality control in the manufacturing location. (The location and date of manufacture is stamped on the back of the pieces.) The packaging says the pieces were manufactured in China, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and/or USA. I think I will be returning the set I got through Amazon.com.

Followed directions, and it rusted after first trip through the dishwasher. Returned item. We had noticed that the forging was poor, as you could see pitted marks right out of the package.
