From the Author
How did I come up with the idea for The Oneness Gospel?
I sought the teachings of the oneness movement in Fiji and India and discovered their congruence with the teachings of Jesus. They are simple, interfaith, and universal. Given the polarized society we live in today, these unity-oriented lessons on personal transformation are very exciting.
What led me to the teachings of the oneness movement? What kinds of ideas are taught?
After experiencing much personal suffering in my family, I began to also experience physical illnesses. I became intrigued with the idea of deeksha as a means to release emotional trauma from the energy layers in the body. I received this blessing and energy from Sai Maa and Amma Amritanandamayi many years ago. These were my first introductions to deeksha and darshan from holy masters. I experienced what it felt like to release suffering and open my heart and to feel being loved unconditionally.
Studying the works of Yogananda and going back to the New Testament made me realize that truth is universal. God's grace arrives in uncountable forms and is always available to everyone. It's free. In the Oneness community, grace is seen as a means of healing.
In the past, deeksha was given only by masters, but now human consciousness is rising to point that we are all able to "tune in" and project this grace with a healing intention to others. The purpose of the Oneness Movement is to awaken the entire human family and offer a gift of grace of spiritual opening (the "flowering of the heart") to ALL people rather than a few select seekers. It is meant to restore wholeness to humanity as well as to the planet. I like this idea and have pursued it for several years.
During my research, I discovered the Oneness teachings as given in India. They originated in Sri Amma and Sri Bhagavan, two people who consider themselves one unified, avataric consciousness. They are God-realized and were initiating the collective force of unified consciousness in the form of something called the Oneness Blessing. It's actually deeksha, but the difference between them and all who have gone before is that they are teaching everyone how to give it. They are interested in creating individual change through this neurobiological event, which they say happens through grace. Once you invite that energy into you, it's there to stay. I thought this was a wonderful idea. It helped inspire the material and lessons in The Oneness Gospel.
I enjoyed traveling to Fiji and India and meeting Bhagavan and all the Dasas who were teaching the material. The experiences I had with the blessing were extraordinary. The spiritual training I received with people from all parts of the planet was exceptional. It helped me personally awaken to a new and enriched way of living.
What is spirituality? Why are so many people seeking a new type of spirituality in this era?
Amma says spirituality is the amount of joy you have in your life. When we filter life through old programming, we cannot experience joy. Most of our suffering, or blockage to joy, is caused by the fact that we cannot live in the present moment. We are living in the past or the future and we carry too much worry and emotional baggage.
Today people want a mystical connection. Many of us go to India or study with a yogic master or guru to get it. Traditional Christianity has scripture and dogma, but it doesn't teach many ways to experience the divine. I thought it was a worthy idea to fuse Eastern and Western concepts, find their congruence, and offer readers a new way of looking at how to connect with God.
Do you think filtering life through "old programming" is such a widespread experience that we may seek a new spirituality?
Yes. People today are seeking to sever their unconscious connection from the past and move into a present-day reality. We carry many emotional patterns that we inherit from our culture and our families, plus old traumas, dramas, and stories that hold us back. We've often heard pronouncements like "women cannot do this" and "you are not good enough." There's also too much religious conditioning. All these things influence our reactions to what's happening to us today. They give us a knee-jerk reaction to life. They set up "grooves" in our brains. That's why we filter present-day reality through old programming and old conditioning. We're on autopilot. We can't live in the present on autopilot. Being aware is part of awakening to a full life filled with joy.
Many of us are seeking a new, dogma-free spirituality, a new way to become closer to the divine presence. We also want to deepen our connection with our image of the Divine in our wisdom traditions. Too many of us feel empty. We're like machines, automated and without life. We've become all about tasks, lists, logic, achievement, materialism, and doing and not being.
To be in conscious awareness of living in the present and fully experiencing life--both good and bad--and just being PRESENT is to be fully engaged in life. Being present is the only way to find joy and fully experience what's in front of us. It doesn't mean we can't make plans and follow the rules. It means the past doesn't tell us how to live today. We can release resentments, unforgiveness, and old memories of old feelings.
When you find that you're coming up short with ways to cope with life, perhaps you'll find my stories and experiences in The Oneness Gospel help you with your own awakening. Let me know how you enjoyed the book! Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org

Some books are like a wonderful fluffy dessert - they taste great and are fun to eat but offer little in the way of nutrition. The Oneness Gospel is a "meat and potatoes" book offering nourishment for both the mind and the soul. It is a book that needs to be read slowly and savored like you would savor a gourmet meal.
Proctor says the Oneness Teachings are for everyone and , indeed, they are regardless of gender, social status, religious affiliation or lack of a religious affiliation. Her teachings speak to the human mind, heart and soul. They allow us to talk about God again without the fear that we might offend someone and answer questions that we may not have raised in our own mind yet.
Her Chapters on "The Mind and Thought" and "Emotional Charges and Healing from Trauma" are the best I have read anywhere and, as a hypnotherapist, I have diligently studied both. If you read only these two chapters you will have been enriched. But you don't want to miss what she says about ego, about suffering, and about heart centered awareness. Actually, Proctor touches on all those issues that are important to us and discusses them with brilliance.
In my view, she truly saved the best for last in the chapter on "Loving God." If you sit with this chapter and read it meditatively you will never be the same and you won't view yourself or those around you in the same way again. It will make your heart sing.
I recommend this book for those who are looking for more. To know what I mean by that - get the book.
In clear and compelling story-telling, she shows us that the profound message of the eastern and western spiritual teachers is the same: we each have the possibility of a direct experience of God, and a deep, abiding connection with all of creation. Whether as taught by Jesus, or the Indian mystics, if we simply allow ourselves to experience that sense of "oneness", our lives will never be the same. The Oneness Gospel is a master class in leading us to that simple yet life-altering experience.
I hope you will treasure this wonderful book as I do. I was honored to write a foreword to the book, and wrote the following to celebrate its birth, and gift:
"Like water changing into wine, the human spirit undergoes a deep and dramatic change if we but dare to shift our vision. When we move from unconscious, self-absorbed living towards a conscious life inspired by human warmth and love -- understanding that we are intimately connected to one another and to everything that dwells within this breathtaking and divine universe --we begin to understand the wonder of an awakened existence. This is an experience of Oneness, available to everyone, and taught by the mystics of every religion.
Whatever your background, this book will inspire you to dig deeply and unpack the holy works in your own wisdom tradition to discover what it means to be both human and divine. Charlene Proctor will help you cultivate a strong, spiritual imagination to see how you can awaken to a wise and thoughtful life and take part in the world where oneness is your calling."
