This player does a great job upscaling dvd's and playing Blue Ray discs. However, I have connected it via ethernet cable to our modem and double checked the connectivity by connecting our laptop to the same. The ethernet port is working great. The problem is with the Onkyo player and Netflix. Netflix progress bar fills completely but the video will not play. Furthermore, Onkyo USA service department has been terrible! They are not the slightest bit concerned with my issue and have shown cursory interest in resolving it. I have called them 4 times to get the issue sorted but have yet to find resolution. Additionally, I have waited for "call-backs" that have never come. I am very disappointed with this player. I am a repeat Onkyo customer and have had one of their home theater systems and have recently upgraded to the tx-nr609 which seems to work fine. It's a good thing because I don't think I would find any resolution if there was an issue with it. I am very disappointed with Onkyo support, or lack thereof. This is the last repeat buy I will make from them...it's Yamaha next time!

The BD-SP309 does precisely what I purchased it to do: play Blu-Rays and DVD's well. So far, I've owned it a couple of months and have really had time to throw quite a few titles at it for standard viewing or for high-definition viewing. My home theater setup involves the 309 run through my Onkyo HT-RC260 and out to my Epson 8350 projector (displayed onto a 120" screen). With this size of screen there are definitely problems if the source can't do it's job correctly (especially if I leave any of the video processing on my A/V receiver set to "off"). With this player, though? No problems to speak of. Load times weren't exactly the fastest, but are nowhere near my dinosaur Samsung BDP-1590 and may improve with future firmware releases. The menu setup and file-playing works well, though I've only tested it once using a thumb drive to verify functionality of playing outside video files. Upscaling is remarkable on this one, which is saying something considering that I still have two Toshiba HD-DVD players which are usually recognized as some of the better DVD upconverters ever produced. The two standard definition discs I tested with the unit were Willow and E.T. Both had crisper detail and an overall smoother image that I just couldn't get using Arcsoft 5 on my HTPC (even using their SIM-HD plugin). All the basic bells and whistles regarding bitstreaming and 24p output worked perfectly and exhibited no audio dropouts or motion judder during playback. I only watched a chunk of one film using VUDU (can't remember which one right off hand) and the player did fine with that even if streamed video quality is usually compressed beyond belief (this is why I don't like to watch streamed movie garbage). Netflix did not work as stated in the specs...or at all for that matter.Read more ›

I have an Onkyo Receiver I like. So I thought an Onkyo 3D Blu-ray player would be a nice addition to go along with it. I wanted to use the Onkyo to stream Netflix and enjoy the surround sound form my Onkyo Receiver. I signed up for Netflix, started to download my first movie. Netflix came up just fine and let me select a move, I am excited now; but after the Netflix progress bar fills completely the video will not play. It hangs for a LONG time at the fill position (may be up to 10 min. or more). Then it finally gives the message: "We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title". I have tried both numerous times, and neither option worked. I have also updated the firm ware to the newest version.

The unit is also very slow loading, and the remote is slow to respond. Most of the time I have to push the remote buttons several times to get it going.

If you just want to watch a movie, it does pretty good, but there are others for much less, that will perform just as well. It is not the quality product that I was hoping for. I upgraded to get the 3D player, but I liked my Sony Blu-ray player much better than this.

I would not recommend this to others.

I bought this player to pair with an Onkyo receiver. Well not only did the Onkyo receiver not recognize it's own Blu-Ray player but the receiver crashed after 6 months. The Blu-ray player is now connected to a Yamaha receiver and is recognized. This player has extremely long load times and does not have the same high quality picture I see in other friends Blu-Ray players even though we have the same TV's. I will say the sound that comes from the player is exceptional but does not make this worth buying when it is extremely slow loading and sub-par video quality. Definitely better deals at this price.

Let get this straight right at the beginning: Onkyo really did themselves a disservice by bringing the 309 blu ray player to the market. It is woefully substandard in terms of picture quality, audio performance, and quality of build. Plus navigation through menus was not that great either. It did load fast though. It would not automatically send audio signals to the analog jacks when a cd was inserted. I never did get it to power the jacks. I gave up after 3 days of listing, watching wanting the purchase to justify my decision. It didn't happen. I've owned several Onkyo receivers and cd players in the past and they were top notch; it puzzles me as to why such a failure on this unit.
