With the HT-S5500, you can experience an even more intense and realistic, three-dimensional movie or gaming experience. The system's powerful receiver hits all the right notes; it featurs a discrete WRAT amplifier for clear, detailed sound; four HDMI® inputs and one output to handle 3D video and high-resolution audio; a USB port for direct digital iPod®/iPhone® connection; and an HDMI-enabled overlaid on-screen display for extra-easy system navigation. Likewise, the two-way front and center speakers are fitted with high-quality drivers and tweeters, while an energy-efficient 120 W subwoofer fills out the bottom end. The system is easy to set up right out of the box, with Audyssey's 2EQ room acoustic correction optimizing the sound for your listening space. With its solid build quality, expansive sound, and intelligent feature set, the HT-S5500 offers you a satisfying blend of perf ormance and value.
3D Video and Audio Return Channel via HDMI
Four HDMI inputs on allow seamless integration of high-definition devices such as Blu-ray players, cable/satellite tuners, and gaming consoles. HDMI implementation on this receiver also supports an Audio Return Channel, allowing TV audio to be sent upstream to the A/V receiver. That means you can enjoy television programs in magnificent Onkyo sound. HDMI also supports 3D video and other popular high-resolution formats.
Direct Digital Connection: The Cleanest Your iPod Can Sound
The front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, using the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will also sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital rather than analog form through the direct digital connection.
ONKYO's Proprietary WRAT Technology
WRAT improves the fidelity of amplified audio and reduces noise across the frequency range, guaranteeing a well-balanced performance even with the most dynamic soundtracks. It achieves this by employing a low negative-feedback amplifier design; using "closed" ground-loop circuitry to cancel noise from individual circuits; and by ensuring high instantaneous-current capability. Also Onkyo uses discrete transistors, which help guarantee a consistent, stable supply of current to the speaker system for an open and assured performance.
Easy Access For Settings Changes
The overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature makes changing the settings on your A/V receiver quick and easy. On-screen set-up menus appear over the video image you're watching so you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to stop the program and switch to a different screen to access menus.
Audyssey Room Correction: You'll Hear The Difference
(1) Audyssey 2EQ tailors multi-channel audio for your home theater speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics.
(2) Audyssey Dynamic EQ® maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.
(3) Audyssey Dynamic Volume® automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content—for example, during commercial breaks—while optimizing the dynamic range.

Top customer reviews
I tried everything and called customer service at 800-229-1687. CS went over trouble shoot and did acknowledge that there is a problem with sub and assured me it will be taken care. He took all the informations from me such as model number, serial number,
my home address and phone number. I waited two weeks and no shipping box or any replacement. I called again then the CS at service department asked if I remember who I spoke to so I said I believe it was Mike, and but not sure, later I learned there is only two CS according to Kent (CS I was talking to) who was rude and not helping anyway.
He told me that warranty paper clearly states that I supposed to just send it to authorized service center, nothing they can do about it. He did gave me the authorized service center address : ADAMS Electronic, 7128 Edinger Ave, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, phone number is 714-848-0110. I asked for the supervisor, Kent asked me why?.... Finally he did connected me to the supervisor's voice mail I left message for her to call me back. Let's wait and see.... People, listen to what everyone is saying, do not make a stupid mistake that I made. DO NOT BUY this product, you will regret!
Like other reviewers, my subwoofer has failed. Knowing about this possibility, I took notes of my system settings to share with you (and Onkyo). First, I had the subwoofer's volume (amp) knob set to 50% as I wanted to play it safe. For the nine months I owned this system I had the crossover set to 100Hz and the bass gain at -2db. However, for a particular film I was about to watch, I changed the crossover down to 70Hz and the subwoofer gain to +2db. The subwoofer did last throughout that film but has not kicked on since. I've tried "jogging the system" as another reviewer suggested (messing with gain and crossover) but alas, I believe it's dead. I have no intention of bickering with Onkyo about a replacement, as I wanted to upgrade to a larger, higher output subwoofer anyway, although, perhaps not this soon.
I would give this system five stars as it performed exactly as well as I expected it to, but for the subwoofer dying in 9 months at only half amp power, I have to rate it 3 stars. Sorry, Onkyo, better get this fixed in the next generation. Its a common weak link that many of us are aware of.
The only negative I've found is the initial power on results in loud clicks and pops from the receiver. The speakers also pop when the TV powers up and connects to the receiver, which I think is a problem of the TV feed not the receiver.
As for adjusting the speaker system with the included microphone, I can't attest as I've never used it. Default settings were good enough for me because I realized the system is actually more than I needed for the room it's in.
Edit: Actually forgot another negative. The mounting brackets and options on the back of the speakers is terrible. You can mount these on the wall, but you'll be adjusting how your mounts attach if you decide to do anything other than hang these on the wall from 1 nail. Comically terrible mounts/mount options on the back.
Edit(7/26/17): Nearing five years now and no problems to date.
But aside from the issue the system works well I've gotta say... hence, the 3 stars instead of 1
