Out of curiosity, I conducted an online search and there are scores of people who are having subwoofer issues with similar Onkyo systems. Most of these consumers are under the assumption that their subwoofer is to blame, when in reality, it's probably just the wiring. I submitted a polite email to the company about a month ago and have yet to hear anything back.
Do yourself a favor: If you are buying an Onkyo system, add a good 15-20 ft RCA cable and a 100' spool of some decent -16 gauge speaker wire to your cart. The wiring that comes with Onkyo home theater systems is cheap, thin, and obviously of poor quality.
Another small thing that Onkyo has been doing for years that I do not like is the speaker connections on the back of the receiver. Unless you spend another $30 on banana connectors, the connections are awkward and difficult to secure.
Aside from that, the system sounds great and is fairly intuitive to use. I purchased the UBT-1 Bluetooth adapter which was a nice addition to the system. It would be nice if they created a home theater in a box package using the completely wireless TX-NR626 receiver.
The codes that came with the manual, and on the Onkyo site do not have a code that works to program my new DVD player to the remote so I have to use two remotes. Also, though it does not say anywhere in the instructions, I have deduced that the speakers should be placed to my right and left while viewing the TV. If that is the case, then my left and right terminals are reversed on the receiver.
If you get either system go ahead and buy 100 ft. of extra speaker wire. The amount they ship with it isn't nearly enough if you are going to run the wires through your basement, or walls, or whatever.
This is nice, but I think the 5.1 systems would have been a better value.
- The AV receiver included in this product is outstanding (if it works) and most feature-filled and tech capable of any other system within this price range.
- The Audyssey optimization/equalization/calibration is a wonderful feature, and it functions dynamically to adjust the audio according to different variables.
First of all, I don't write reviews on sites like Amazon typically, because I tend to research and discuss products on tech-enthusiast sites; however, product deficiency and defects abound with this home theatre system, and -- given ONKYO's indifference in reference to customer satisfaction -- I feel obligated to warn potential buyers of the serious problems with this product.
- The quality control and reliability of ONKYO would be laughable if they were not stealing money from consumers. My first receiver was defective, then the replacement sub was defective, and then that subwoofer replacement died in two months.
-As many others have reported before me -- and as a google search will plainly show -- the sub-woofers included in this package (SKW-591's) are quite simply defective and should have been fully recalled and replaced. Issues include EMI (humming noise) caused by what ONKYO insists is a ground loop (all I can say in response to the claim that ground loops cause the EMI that so many customers have reported is the following: I have three surround sound systems of varying quality and I have never had EMI from any of them.) If ONKYO were to be honest they would acknowledge that the EMI issues with the SKW-591 are caused by a failure to include electromagnetic shielding inside the unit and the pathetically cheap speaker wire that they bundle with it.Read more ›
- The sound is exhilarating, especially if you get the Audyssey setting right. Easy to set-up Audyssey
- Sub-woofer had been good, no issues.
- Flexible options on each mode for different type of input.
- Incredible bass
- Had one significant issue.
I use it to integrate my LCD TV, Bluray, DVR, Epson 2030 3D Projector, PC in the living room. All the inputs worked great except Bluray. I had brief blackouts(1-2 sec) with no video but continuous audio, 3-4 times an hour. I was frustrated and I thought it was my new epson 2030 projector. After changing multiple HDMI cables and a new bluray player, I nailed it down to the receiver.
This is where avsforum came to rescue.
I was told that the color spacing can have a compatibility issue. Y/Cb/Cr was set at Auto. I changed it to 4:2:2 in the sony BDP-S5100 Bluray player. Voila...saved my life.
Not sure why Onkyo would have an issue , but I am a happy customer now.
Just watched Life of Pi in 3D, incredible bass and Dolby Surround sound. I had to increase the volume on center speaker though for dialogues.
I totally recommend it , but watch out for bluray player blackout issue. All other features are fantastic.
