Works until it Doesn't.

I'm about to retire this unit after so many years. I haven't used its HDMI capability for years, as it died within 1 week of the warranty expiring. The repair cost was quoted to 150$. I declined. The price was right, and it worked as intended, but those who think they'll be free and clear with great discounts on these Onkyo units should beware. When I bought a different, newer model for my parents, similar price range and discount, it did the same.

Then why is my review four stars? Well, frankly, my 46XBR9 and then 65X850B Sony TVs all had enough HDMI ports I needed for devices, and more importantly they had the ability to push audio out through the optical toslink port. The Onkyo hasn't had any issues playing that. It's still paired with KEF iQ10 (x2) and KEF iQ60c center channel, a Klipsch 450W sub, and then some throwaway sony towers in the back for 5.1 setup.

I bought the SR606 in late 2008. I started having HDMI switching problems around 2012. They became progressively worse. I was just about to throw it away and order a Yamaha. But I decided to try fixing it first.

Today I replaced a bunch of capacitors on the HDMI board and installed a computer fan to keep it cool. So far it seems to have fixed the problem.

I bought the SR606 in late 2008. I started having HDMI switching problems around 2012. They became progressively worse. I was just about to throw it away and order a Yamaha. But I decided to try fixing it first.

A sound decision

The electronic giants have pretty much confused their intended market. They introduce "must-have" technologies every year, at least. There are buildings full of people making up acronyms that add to the confusion. They have billion-dollar fights over various technologies. As the song says, "What's a poor boy to do?"

Lots of people clearly have not done anything. Their equipment is already digital, so the movies and music are clear and sharp. They are not unhappy with what they have. And, they are confused about what the new stuff, worried that it is just another path to obsolescence. I was pretty much in this camp as well.

Why did I buy a new receiver? My old one broke and I had no choice, so I started looking around. Actually, I had some issues with the old unit. It did not have HDMI connections, so I had a dozen cables running all over. The TV and the DirecTv HD satellite receiver had HDMI connections. I also wanted to get a Blu-Ray player and those are at their best with HDMI. In short, I was getting cable envy.

Then there was the sound. My living room is the worst possible place for good sound. It is all wood and glass with an odd shape and other rooms open to it. I hated the harsh and bouncy sound, the unintelligible voices and ringing high notes. I knew the new AVRs had microphones and automatic speaker set-up features. That sounded good to me. I thought that this was a technology that might make a real difference.

I did not worry much about the power. They are all loud enough in a typical room. I did not worry much about the claims of subtle sound quality issues. Home theater sound is highly processed, loud and dramatic. Musical nuances that are important in a dedicated quality stereo system are just lost in playing The Dark Knight!

In the end, it was all in the room dynamics for me. A million dollar receiver without near-perfect speaker playback would not sound any better than the cheapest one out there in my room. This is going to be true for most people. Few of us have dedicated and properly configured listening rooms.

Onkyo uses the Audyssey system to set up the speakers. Other companies use different, although similar, technologies. I believe that Audyssey is as least as good as anything in this middle range price class. The supplied microphone was connected to the unit, strange noises were emitted and in a short time all the speakers were putting out the appropriate signals. The TX-SR606 has plenty of actual power, so the sound is strong and effortless. I can hear dialogue, the surround sound is fun and everyone is amazed at how much better it all is. Even my Luddite brother, who feels most of this is all a waste of money, thinks the sound is fantastic. This was a huge upgrade for me, much more than what I was expecting.

The improvement is very noticeable on every show, newscasts, everything, not just with jets and explosions.

My system is 5:1. I hope to never hook up seven speakers. Maybe if I had a huge dedicated engineered theater room.

I like the HDMI cabling. Three cables and everything is connected and it all works perfectly. The Onkyo has four HDMI inputs, so you can connect a disc player, a sat/cable box, an Apple TV (or such) and a game console all at once. A good feature. Most other receivers in the same price category only have two inputs.

I was able to buy the cheapest Sony Blu-Ray because the Onkyo does the decoding of the new sound formats. If the receiver does not have that capability, then you must buy the more expensive Blu-Ray players that have the ability to do the decoding themselves. It is confusing.

The Onkyo will upconvert, so a regular DVD looks almost as good a a Blu-Ray disc on the screen. In fact, we think many TV shows look better now. Maybe it upconverts DirecTv as well as discs.

Onkyos have honest power ratings and the power is enough to easily drive my nice but inefficient B&Ws. It is fairly big and heavy, so I like to think it is rugged and has lots of good stuff inside.

Some reviewers hate the Onkyo's style. I think it looks interestingly different, maybe a bit of a vintage look. I think it is fine. A more conventional design would just be ho hum. I do like the option of silver. Nobody else offers anything but black. Personally, I don't like the black scientific instrument look.

The remote is fine. I used it to set up the receiver, but use a Harmony One (see review) for everyday operation. That is the way to go.

The manual could be better. I would like suggested set-ups and settings, rather than pages of optional ways of doing things. How many people are AV hobbyists and how many just want to get it to work correctly?

The SR606 hits the sweet spot in price and in features that are important to most users. It decodes and connects everything. It seems that it will not be obsolete for a long time. I recommend it.

Why only fours star then? I think having to choose between twenty-seven different listening modes is stupid. A modern receiver should simply output the best signal it can, automatically. One can get paranoid that, gee, should I be listening to "DTS 96/24" or "DTS-ES Discrete". Or what? That costs it a star. It would cost any receiver I know of one star.

Don't Make the Same Mistake I Made! Don't Buy Onkyo!

I bought the Onkyo TXSR606 because my previous Onkyo 5.1 receiver had served me so well. When it was time to upgrade to a 7.1 receiver with HDMI inputs for Blu-ray and other HD video, I immediately thought of the Onkyo 606. I also needed multichannel analog inputs for my SACD player. The Onkyo 606 seemed to fit the bill.

Setup was easy with the Audissey sound calibration system. the 4 HDMI inputs were exactly what I needed. For the better part of 2 years, the receiver worked flawlessly for me. I used it as a surround sound receiver for movies and as a receiver for music.

However, a couple of months ago, some problems started. I would attempt to watch a movie and switch the receiver to the Blu-ray input or my DISH HD input and I would get a NO SIGNAL readout on the Onkyo unit and no sound and no picture on my TV. eventually, the signal would pop on, but sometimes the picture was degraded and I would have to turn the unit off and back on. I replaced a few HDMI cables and the problem persisted.

I started googling the issue, and found out sadly, that I was not alone. In fact, the HDMI problems with this receiver appear to be endemic. I have read literally hundreds of posts by users like me who have had the HDMI functions of the Onkyo 606 receiver fail. Even the people who have returned their receivers to Onkyo for sevice are reporting that the problems keep coming back. Apparently there is a circuit board problem in the unit that fails after a year or so, and this causes the HDMI connections to fail. My unit is just over 2 years old and is out of warrany. And because I bought it from Amazon Warehouse deals, Onkyo would not have honored the warranty anayway.

If Onkyo were a stand up company they would recall these units and fix them free of charge. By the time you ship the unit back to them (at your expense) you've already spent a great deal of money as the receiver is heavy. And considering that it will probably fail again, there seems to be no point in even bothering to have it repaired (and the parts are frequently on backorder; the problem is that prevalent). Your money would be well spent toward a new receiver made by someone other than Onkyo.

I now am searching for an affordable receiver that has all the bells and whistles as the Onkyo 606 without all the problems. Take my advice, and DO NOT BUY ONKYO. They make an inferior product and do not stand behind it.

If you google this receiver, or check around on the AVS forum, you may find that some clever owners have discovered why the HDMI board fails on this unit, and how it may be fixed. It generally involves replacing several capacitors (9 or so) on the HDMI board. I found photos and YouTube videos about the problem; ordered some capacitors; and tried my hand at removing the old capacitors and soldering on new ones (even though I know diddly about soldering). Once I was done, I powered it up, and ~ voila ~ the HDMI function was as good as new (however, I must add that some owners did not manage to fix their units even after soldering new capacitors on the board).

I used the receiver for several more months. Recently, I upgraded to a 3D TV, and decided to upgrade to a receiver that would pass 3D signals. This time, I went with a....Denon. This is where Onkyo has hurt themselves. Because they did not stand by a product that loses functionality (in great numbers) right after its warranty runs out, I do not consider them a reliable company. The two Onkyos I have bought over the years will be my last. I gave mine away as it was still functioning after my repair.

Overheating is an issue with all receivers. I advise all to make sure their receiver gets lots of ventilation, whatever the make. I have read of HDMI failures in almost all brands (including Denon), but none seemed to have as many failed units as Onkyo did at the time they produced the 606 and other models of that era.

This is the receiver you want!

This is it.

I mean, come one! It's got 4 HDMI inputs, it upscales all inputs ( component, svideo, and even composite inputs) so you can use a single HDMI output, and it has the Audyssey eq system - all for under $500 (at the time of this writing)

The first 3 features are relatively self explanatory to you home theater gurus but the Audyssey system requires some additional explanation and praise.

This was one of the selling points for me. Even though I knew very little about it, it sounded cool. Basically you place the supplied microphone at various points in your room and hit a button on the receiver. It sends out some weird-sounding twirps over each speaker, one at atime, and then completely adjusts your speaker levels and EQ settings automatically. I found the result to be striking to say the least.

I recently re-did my entire home theater which involved replacing everything in my system except the chairs. Blu-ray, 1080i projector, in-wall speakers, and a whomping subwoofer were all purchased. To tie it all together I purchased this Onkyo TX-SR606.

When I first hooked this unit up to my new speaker setup (with no adjustments yet made) I was already impressed with the sound. My discerning ears noticed a few things that I might adjust, like perhaps the center channel needed to be turned up and the subwoofer turned down a bit. However, I did not worry about that at all. Instead, I just plugged in this magic little mic and pushed the "enter" button. The unit prompted me to move the microphone around a room a few times. About 15 minutes later it was done.

The difference in sound was immediately noticeable. My subwoofer was less muddy, the mids and highs became noticeably clearer, and I even found I could crank the system up more without distortion.

Of course your results may vary, but my results were absolutely striking.

A final note, the entire Onkyo TX line is great but note that THIS model (the sr606) is probably the minimum model that you will want. I would stay away from the cheaper ones in this line. Not only do they lack video upconversion (which is typical for cheaper receivers and might not be a big deal for you), but they do not pass any sound on the HDMI inputs through. Yikes, you will need to run separate cables for the sound! This doesn't make any sense and contradicts the whole purpose of HDMI.

This (the sr606) does NOT have the above issues. This is the one you want!

I never even tried the remote for this Onkyo. I use a Logitech Harmony 880 universal remote to control the entire system (and you should too!)

Great receiver for price; humming issue easily solved with HDMI cable

I purchased this receiver based on the reviews, and the fact that it had a lot more for the money than other receivers. I know that the 607 is here, but I didn't really need 6 HDMI inputs or 7.2 since my current system is a 5.1 system already. I replaced a Sony theater in a box system with this new receiver, and 4 Polk 8" in-ceiling speakers. I have to say this system sounds pretty awesome compared to the old Sony setup I had. I was particularly impressed with the surround sound which sounded great! Overall this has been a good purchase, but there are a couple of things that everyone should know!

First off the hum sound that many people were complaining about here, I had the same problem when I first turned on the system I could hear a really faint hum. When I let the 606 do it's auto calibration, the hum got a lot worse! I found that I could reduce it by changing the equalizer back to off from the "Audyssey" that the automatic setup did. I found that the hum was coming from the sub, and not any of the surround speakers. I then searched about and found a page talking about cable boxes causing a hum in the subwoofer, and so I disconnected my cable box (Component with composite cables for sound), the humming went away. I also read that a ground loop isolator can fix the humming problem, which was my next option if the HDMI cable hadn't worked, but I didn't purchase one to test either. You can find those here on Amazon for fairly cheap.

I solved the hum on my system by changing the cable box to HDMI and not Component/Composite setup that I had at first!

I also have a PS3, which some people complained caused this hum issue, but I didn't have a hum problem from the PS3 mine is connected via HDMI.

Other things I really like about this receiver, is that I am able to use this remote to control all the equipment for the most part. The TV really only gets turned on and off now since everything goes through the 606, I don't have to switch inputs on the TV any more. The cable box I have also could use the Onkyo remote, but I can't pause live tv, or rewind etc. on the DVR part of my cable box. This isn't a big deal to me, as long as I can change the channel and set up future recordings which I can do.

The sound was pretty easy to set up, and the auto calibrate did a pretty good job after I was able to eliminate the hum issue.

Night mode is also a pretty cool feature. Basically it just reduces the low sound effects so that it doesn't rumble the entire house when a movie is being played loudly. The only thing I didn't know is that it would only work with Dolby Digital formats when I first bought it. This was irritating when I first was trying to figure out how to get it in to night mode with my PS3 which was putting out audio in PCM format. Since it seems the PCM format doesn't support Dolby Surround sound. When I changed the audio output to bitstream, I could then use the night mode. Anyway since I have a small child that sleeps in the next room over from my main setup, it is a very nice feature to have.

The bad parts about the 606: changing channels on my DVR is slower now that it goes through the receiver, and since it was already slow with Dish network, that is kind of irritating. Also the PS3 seems to change sound schemes a lot when it starts a game, which is preceded by an audible pop on the receiver for each one. This is irritating when a game is starting up, but I haven't had a problem once all the startup screens are out of the way.

Overall I would give the 606 a 4 and 1/2 star review but leaning more towards 5 so I went with that. I have been very pleased with the 606.

Quite A Performer!

After considerable shopping, reading of reviews, I decided on the Onkyo 606. I have been very pleased with its performance at all levels. As others have mentioned, it has inputs that will accommodate all of your needs that I can think of. Set up was easy, though thin fingers will help with speaker wire installation! Plenty of power to run my system (7.1). I was also influenced by the "hedge against the future" advantage of this unit. The Audyssey speaker calibration was easy to use and very effective in a room with some unique demands. It will calculate distance, volume, and tone of each speaker to create a full surround sound from the listening area. (You take 3 readings - not just one.) If you don't like the sound, you can redo the readings, or manually calibrate to suit your taste. The available Listening Modes are numerous & quite impressive, including some unique to Onkyo receivers (such as Modes for unplugged, rock, studio, classical, to TV shows set in a studio vs. cinema settings and game settings). I find the chart in the manual very helpful in choosing a mode for my listening or viewing choice. Unlike some receivers, the different Listening Modes are noticeably different from one another, giving you more choices for what sounds good to your ear.

Many of the reviews have focused on its video pluses, and there are many, but my primary use is for audio. (Though its upconversion of a DVD to an LG LCD was quite stunning via HDMI.) I have played FM stations, CD's,DIV Audio, and SACD's through this receiver and its range and power render a clear, accurate, balanced surround field. It can read the signal from an SACD via the HDMI cable, eliminating the need for the 5 or 7 analog cables usually required for multi channel devices (though it can take them, too). The 90 wts. per channel is more than enough to drive my Bose 601 floors, Bose 301 surrounds, and Bose 201 surround back speakers with plenty of oomph left for the subwoofer. I did tweak the center speaker a bit and dialog is clear and audible in all Listening modes.

I have had no problems with hum or noise that some have reported. Running hot? All receivers make heat, so allow some top space and exhaust for ventilation. I have about 6-8 inches above and leave a cabinet door open for extended play and have had no problems or heat issues.

This is a good receiver with tons of options and capabilities. For the price, it outperforms the field. I can recommend highly.

The "repaired" unit is now doing the exact same thing after having it back for a little over three months. As evidenced by the comments below this appears to be a common problem.

AVOID this brand and/or AVOID this model and price point. Clearly ONKYO has not figured out how to do HDMI switching. Anyone know a brand/model that does?

10 weeks now and still in the shop. There are now so many of these units with bad HDMI I'm considering a class-action lawsuit. Clearly Onkyo has created a peice of junk and cannot seem to fix it. Customer Service must be getting verbally beaten up daily now with all the complaints. I've never been so frustrated in my life dealing with a defective product. I have tons of tech gear, I work in the IT industry, I'm used to things not working exactly as they should but Onkyo has raised (lowered) the bar in poor quality control and customer dis-service. Nice job.

Seven months after I bought this the HDMI switching stopped working. It's now been in the shop for SIX WEEKS along with several other SR-606s waiting to have their HDMI boards replaced. If this fixes the problem for good it's still a great receiver. If not, it's a peice of junk.

I was looking to replace an older Pioneer system with one that had better (cleaner) power and HDMI. The Onkyo TX -SR 606 was the perfect choice. Great sound, easy automatic configuration and calibration and all the bells and whistles that 99% of the people out there will ever need. Plus you can't beat the price.

Several of the reviews mention that the unit runs hot - mine does not. I was so worried about heat that I ran mine for days out where I could monitor it and never felt like it was running any hotter than any other electronic component I've owned. It's now in an open cabinet with adequate ventilation so no worries there.

All in all a great receiver as evidenced by the number of units shipping and positive reviews. Mine's coupled with the Mirage Nanosat 5.1 and it fills my large room with vaulted ceilings perfectly. Highly recommended.

Edit Sept 2010: Consider what I wrote below prior to the hardware failing and dying. Over the last month we've had big issues getting the PlayStation 3 to "sync" with the HDMI signal and as of this week, our Tivo fails to sync with the signal for 20-minutes before it kicks on. Searching the Internet finds that many folks have issues with the capacitors that handle the HDMI signal failing (or something technical like that), causing the box to respond with "no signal" until they apparently "warm up" which may take 10-20 minutes before you can watch TV again. This is a show stopper. No amount of money is worth the hassle of having a 2-year old piece of hardware crap the bed, now I'm looking at Pioneer and Sony, never buying Onkyo again; just not worth my time.

I've never had an Onkyo product before, this replaced my fairly new Rotel which was a good triple the cost. The Rotel was nice, but for the amount of money I spent I was burned when HDMI and all the other technologies came out and were adopted by hardware designers.

The Rotel was nice, but cost wise, the amount I spent for five years of life (before it was obsolete) was disappointing. The Onkyo adapted well into my environment, with my HD Tivo and wired my old DVD player into the Onkyo to upscale to HDMI. I'm not worried about picture clarity (although it's great) but that it fits the screen well, requires less wiring and can run through the same TV source--it's all about simplicity.

Although the system is a big big, it's a cost effective way to enable HDMI and high-end audio/visuals. It has a great on-screen menu system which is navigational and usable, configures just what I need and gets the job done in short order.

Simple to install, simple to use, set it and forget it. Nobody wants to spend all their time trying to get electronic devices to work to perfection, they want it to do this out-of-the-box. Onkyo did that for me, and I've since forgotten it was there, another piece of working electronics and that's how things should be.

Great Receiver for the price - UPDATE HDMI failures

As many, many reviewers now point out... this unit will have HDMI board problems somewhere in the neighborhood of one year after purchase. Wish I had known that before I spent 4 hours trouble shooting every component and cable in the system only to find the info readily available through a google search. Now, I was lucky in the following ways.... I was still under the 2 yr warranty when mine failed, there was a local shop in Dallas that was authorized to work on the unit so I didn't have to ship it, and finally, the backlog of units to be repaired had been worked down so it only took 4 days to get it back from the shop. But even though I have a happy ending, I must tell you that you CAN NOT purchase this product and expect it to work properly without an HDMI failure within 2 years. Don't even think about it!!! You will not get "lucky".

In fairness, once I got it back it works well. But who wants to go through this hassle? In general though, Onkyo's other products are probably fine to buy.

There's plenty of other techno geeks who can write solid bit/byte reviews. So, I'll just give you the layperson review (that's what most of us need right?). I upgraded to this from a much older Onkyo because when I got my BD player and Plasma, I found the receiver didn't decode the audio for 5.1. Grrrrrr!!! Frustrating to watch extreme HD video with Pro Logic sound. So, I researched and put this bad boy in my Amazon cart at 499 but didn't pull the plug. Then one day, mysteriously, while checking my cart on something else I saw that it had dropped to 399. Decided to yank the ripcord. Shipping was super fast even though I had selected the free Super saver shipping. Got the thing in ~3 days. Most of the hookup was super easy and you gotta love only needing 3 HDMI cables to do everything you need for Cable box and BD player. Loved using the Audyssey setup mic. And my surround sound has never sounded this good. Yahtzeee!

Now as always, it took at little jimmying with settings at some point to get everything right. The manual is written by someone who thinks we like Treasure Hunts. You track down the page that has your topic (you think), read a while and just as your almost to the treasure, you are referred to another page. Jeeeezzz. This last bit is mostly why I gave it a 4 star.

At this price point though, it is a total steal. I recommend.
