Only in America Hardcover – January 1, 1958
by
Harry Golden
(Author)
If you read only one book this year you'll want it to be "Only in America" because Only in America could there be a Harry Golden - a cigar-chomping, scalpel-wielding individualist who loves people and has become the author of this No.1 best-seller. And Only in America could this happen to a book which deflates sham with rapier wit - routs prejudice with a laugh from the belly - casts an eye on womanhood from Cleopatra to Debbie Reynolds - gives a "recipe" for chopped chicken liver and schmaltz - reveals there are no homely girls - tells how to get a husband - describes buying a winter suit on the hottest day of the year - and contains laughter, warmth, wit, wisdom and the indescribable personality of Harry Golden on every wonderful page.

Review
?The book has many distinctions, not the least of which is the unique and remarkable sympathetic view of the white South in its desegregation travail as seen through the eyes of one who has himself felt the edge of prejudice.?-Nation --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Want to peak into the political issues society in 1955 dealt with ? This is an easy to read tongue in cheek commentary on the political and social issues of the 1950’s . What I learned is that politicians were always evil , both parties run a giant money laundering machine called government . While the author is a liberal he is a common sense liberal of the day . Today’s progressives would not like Harry ..

A very old book. Values that are no longer here. Fun looking back on life how it used to be. The author had great insight. I think everyone should read this book.

I first read this book in the early 1950's. It is as entertaining and timely now as it was then.

Golden is a great writer and back in the 60s did a great job of memorializing the Jewish ghetto experience.

Harry Golden's insights about race, immigration and life in America are as good now as they were in the 50's when I first read the book.
